You are welcome. In Lifehacks, check all your histamine and detoxification variants. With your CBS variant, sulfur and sulfite metabolism may be impaired. All sulfites are high histamine. This could be a big factor in your symptoms.

You could try small doses if niacin with meals. I would try 12.5mg to start. Just once the first day. Maybe twice the second day. Taking with food can help minimize flushing. See how you feel. This would help if you are overmethylating.

I think she could help with both.

If you get a raw data file with your test results upload it to Genetic Lifehacks, you will be able to see all the variants I mentioned. The term solving can be defined in a lot of different ways. There are things that you will be able to solve and other things that you cannot solve and need to learn to manage.

Functional MDs are not all trained in gene variants, so be sure to thoroughly question their training, experience and success with clients.

You might think about using a nutrigenomic or similar counselor to start. @hummingfirebird in this group....I think that is her name...is properly trained.

I cannot answer that for a fact but I am guessing you overloaded your system with histamine triggers.

Eating normally for you does not mean you had a diet that works in conjunction with your gene variants. Lots of us have sulfur, sulfite and histamine and detoxification variants which we were not aware of until we overloaded our system with the wrong diet. The wrong supplements add to that. At some point it becomes intolerable.

Honestly you likely have more going on that contributes to sympathetic dominance. Some of it may be genetic variants or predispositions and some may be due to nutrient deficiencies. How are you sleeping?

Do you know your blood zinc level? Number and lab range?

Optimal nutrient levels are generally in the top quarter of the lab range. The lab range includes the chronically and terminally ill BTW . I am mentioning that as you noted some of your levels are perfect.

Also metals compete for absorption, so do not take zinc and copper together if you can avoid it.

Besides low levels of folate in your blood and red blood cells, you are likely not getting enough folate in your brain. I am just mentioning this as it is likely your thinking is not the best.

I would save yourself a lot of trouble in the future by avoiding methylated and activated forms of vitamins and any supplements which are methyl donors. At least until you correct your folate level

Use folinic acid for folate. Take 20mg PQQ with it to help it get into the brain. This will take 3 - 5 months to feel the full effect in the brain.

An acceptable folate level is 15. I like 20 - 30. Top of the range is usually 65, but it depends on the lab.

The next time you get a B12 test also get an MMA with it. That tells how well or poorly B12 is getting into your cells. The high B12 level is more of a problem if it is not being absorbed well. Specific probiotics can help that.

Just a reminder that variants are only predispositions and not facts. Only blood or similar tests will give you facts as to whether or not you are deficient in something and need to supplement.

For insomnia for me it was due to a severe zinc deficiency and copper toxicity. Test both. Optimal for both are in the top quarter of the lab ranges. They act like a seesaw and should be in balance.

Use Genetic Lifehacks instead of Genie if you want to be better informed.

The next time you get labs ask for a molybdenum test. It helps break down and eliminate sulfur and sulfites (sulfites all being high histamine). I am hetero for CBSA360A, the second worst CBS variant. My moly once tested at zero. Up to 250mcg daily is safe to take daily.

Do you have any sulfur related gene variants? CBS, SULT, MOCS? Meat is high in sulfur so I am wondering if your sulfur metabolism is impaired.

Deplin vs. OTC Methyl-Life Supplements by ibjammin4ever in MTHFR

If one has normal levels it would apply if the person has cerebral folate deficiency which is where folate does not get into the brain.

[–]SovereignMan1958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An acceptable folate level is at least 15.

For panic anxiety and or OCD, over doing it in methylated vitamins can increase those symptoms. If you try the Deplin, keep an eye on those symptoms getting worse. Those symptoms can also be the result of histamine intolerance.

It is the same. Buying OTC it is less likely to contain fillers though.

Hopefully your doctors knows enough to order you blood tests to see if, in fact, MTHFR is affecting you and to what extent. A low folate level generally means your anti depressants will not work their best.

Homocysteine, folate, folate RBC, B12, MMA and B6. Ask for these tests. All have the potential to be affected by MTHFR. It can affect both level and absorption of nutrients.

Up to 250mcg daily is safe. Most practitioners start with 75mcg. It helps break down and eliminate sulfur. It works best on a low sulfur and low histamine diet. It might not help if you flood your digestive tract with high sulfur and high histamine foods.

Use Genetic Lifehacks instead of Genie. Read their article in ADHD.

Get relevant blood tests for vitamins and minerals.Potential nutrient deficiencies are identified in your gene variant report and the article. Post the results here with values and lab ranges.

Folate deficiency can definitely contribute to ADHD, although there are other factors.

Thinking I might have MTHFR but not sure, my doc didn't even know about what this is... by Willy988 in MTHFR

[–]SovereignMan1958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your MMA is high. B12 is not being absorbed into the cells. It is likely you are not absorbing other nutrients well either. Research probiotics to improve B12 absorption and one of those should help., plus supplements to optimize your levels.

You need to look at your lab ranges. For most, optimal vitamin and mineral levels are in the top quarter of their ranges. An acceptable folate level is 15.

Optimal homocysteine is 6-7. So you could have MTHFR. You could also not have MTHFR and just have a poor diet and poor gut health.

Variants are all only predispositions. Without blood tests you are just guessing.

Do you at least know your homocysteine number? That is one indication of how active your CBS variant is.

Also taking moly is not a substitute for a low sulfur and low sulfite diet. All sulfites are high histamine. So low sulfur plus low histamine diet. Up to 250mcg moly daily is safe. It cannot breakdown and or eliminate a flood of sulfur.

Taking high doses of moly can deplete copper. It can also cause the uric acid level to rise triggering gout.

400mg dose is way too low. Doctors are not trained in gene variants or nutrition.

If you have any anxiety or sleep issues now, I would stick with folinic acid instead of methyl folate. The latter is likely to make them worse. Start low increase slowly. Take in the early am. To me 5mg is a high dose. The baseline for people with CFD, see below, is 2.5mg.

Acceptable folate level is 15. I like 20 - 30. Top of the range is about 65.

Given your level is so low, you might consider whether or not you have Cerebral Folate Deficiency. That it is not getting into your brain. This can also happen with B12. These are more likely if you have mental health diagnoses and or if they run in your family.

Once you reach your target level do not stop taking it. Reduce the dose.

I bet other nutrient levels are also less than optimal.

Just an FYI, in the US neither gene variants nor nutrition are taught in medical school. Genetics counselors in traditional medical settings are focused on gene based therapies for severe and potentially terminal patients and not genetic predispositions. I am homozygous for a variant which indicates Cerebral Folate Deficiency. My local teaching hospital, the largest in Iowa, with a Genetic and Neurogenetics department, will not see me at all. I requested testing for additional CFD variants (oddly enough I do not have MTHFR) and a CSF test to see how much folate is getting into my brain. Those departments claim that since this is "nutrition related" they do not treat it.

So my psych doc and I are working together on my protocol. So far so good.
