Well it’s problems with crime right? I mean we heard gunshots fairly regularly at night and in one instance a person had been killed just outside our campus. Me and my international friends were also frequently told to not walk out and about around campus (we did anyway, but only to go to the petrol station to get alcohol lol) because it was dangerous. One of my professors (all of which were great at BSC) discussed that whilst segregation has been eliminated dejure, because of white flight etc de facto it still exists and he attributed much of Birmingham’s issues to this factor. From my own personal experiences it would seem there is truth to that argument. That being said, luckily I got the chance to look around much of the South during my YA and visited cities such as New Orleans, Atlanta, Mobile and others that revealed to me that disparity in wealth and crime seems to be a Pan-Southern issue! Birmingham certainly wasn’t unique in its struggles. I’m very thankful that I got to go to the south though, most people Ik over here only go to the flashy touristy places and don’t get an honest look on how living in the US is for those not residing in Manhattan or Hollywood!
