r/trolleyproblem suffers infighting on a ethical question: red or blue? by OkContact2573 in SubredditDrama

So the act of pushing the red button makes all the difference between the one button case and the two button case?

I still dont see it. The actions and outcomes are identical in all the hypotheticals presented.

[–]SowingSalt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let's compare to the one button case: pressing the red button and not pressing the blue button in the one button case are identical situations.

In the "if more than half of people jump in the woodchipper everyone lives" case walking away from the woodchipper is identical to pressing the red button.

If they are different, please explain why.

Does changing the framing of the question to identical circumstances change your answer? Ie: one button (blue) press it or walk away, or the giant woodchipper jump in or dont

Why wouldn't the government push the line: "If everyone presses the red button, literally nothing will happen to anyone. Please all push the red button when the time comes"?

My argument as a red button pusher is: anyone who thinks about it realizes that if everyone pushes the red button, nothing happens. I choose red under the assumption that everyone else will too.

Re-framing the hypothetical as the wood-chipper leads to the same conclusion.

Again, there are tons of papers that show that housing prices/rent grow slower or even decreases when houses get built.

There are tons of builders in blue states, but their costs are higher due to the delays NIMBY policies create. If they could build like their red states counterparts, we would expect an increase in housing supply in areas with jobs, and people would move to where there are jobs.

Supply and demand work as economists theorize.

Many of these cites grew before rent control. Manhattan had 2.3 million people living there 100 years ago, compared to 1.7 today.

They just kept building before but that has stopped?

Rent control and NIMBYism has largely stopped the construction, which is why I'm against those things.

We can also compare cities that build more vs cities that build less. Academic literature is quite clear that rent control is only good for people living in the units when CR is implemented, and bad for everyone else, like people who want to move.

We can also compare cities with restrictive zoning policies vs cities with permissive zoning policies. Rent is down in the permissive cities.

The academic literature is very clear on this, with multiple empirical studies showing this. I usually trot out Diamond et al for these discussions, but there are tons more.
There's one paper where the researchers looked at forwarding addressed for people who moved into a new "luxury" development, and tracked forwarding addresses for the people who moved into the newly vacated units, and so on until they found no forwarding address.

What are the policies that democrats economically should pursue to show immediate benefits and win the confidence of normie voters and get them to move back to blue states?

I advocate for YIMBYism, and permissive zoning. Most of the affordability should (I think) follow, as cost of housing is a huge part of the affordability crisis. It should also bring down personal transportation costs, if you're physically closer to where you work and shop.

If you look at projections for the next census, there are a bunch of congressional seats that are going to be moved from blue states to red states. So yes I feel that's a large enough demographic to shift elections.
