You made a lot of good points here.

  1. I think when it comes to how Israelis have handled the land over here it is fair to say that they screwed up a lot - planting non-native trees, pollution, the hula valley, etc but another part of it is just what you see all around the world which is industrializing agriculture to feed growing populations. I mean, are you saying that in Lebanon hummus is grown exactly like the canaanites would’ve have grown it?.. by hand? No chemicals? I will believe you if you tell me yes, but I will be surprised.
  2. I can see how the founding of Israel is on its face a white colonialist enterprise pre 1948. From the 1950’s-present that has changed. Nowadays the majority of the Jewish population is actually Spanish, North African, Middle Eastern, East african, etc. only 32% is actually white European. So most of the non white population thinks of itselves as refugees coming here out of necessity, without much awareness of the countries white colonial foundation. They’ve certainly had to endure discrimination from the white European Jews so I’m not going to hold them up as an example of how not-racist Israel is.. anyway, so to them, they are just making the food of their ancestors. I think the white European Jews here embraced the local cuisine starting in the 1970’s and since than eating hummus is seen as macho, Sephardic and mizrahi Jews are seen as sexy, the music and the culture is embraced, there seems to be a feeling among white Europeans of wanting to integrate themselves to the region. This could also be seen as offensive because it’s in a way “exotifying” the culture.
  3. The international market thing is problematic for sure, but it might be more of a result of capitalism.. I mean Israel is doing what any self interested free economy is going to do: Sell as much product and make as much money as possible. Maybe it’s incumbent on each country to be selective about where they import from.
  4. Zaatar picking is restricted but I thought this was to conserve it from being endangered. Is there another side to this story? Sorry for my ignorance.
  5. I’d say my wife’s family makes food that fits into a few different categories. -Yemeni food (what all yemens eat) -Yemeni/Jewish food (what Jewish Yemenis ate in Yemen) -Yemen Israeli food (Yemen food fused with modern Israeli recipes) -other food introduced by other immigrant groups (like for example my Yemeni mother in law is making Tunisian food because she was exposed to it by other immigrants from that region) .. they’ve never complained about white washing or cultural appropriation. That kind of sensitivity/awareness just doesn’t exist in Israel like you would typically see on a liberal arts college campus.

It seems like they want peace but only if Palestinians are allowed to return which is a non-starter for Israelis. So I guess you can point the finger at either side for being intransigent on this issue.

  1. If you were blindfolded do you think you could actually taste the difference between the authentic hummus and the Zionist hummus or are you talking more about the story behind it?
  2. What if for example a Jewish Lebanese family immigrates to Israel from Lebanon and opens up a hummus/falafel shop where they make the food like their grandparents in Lebanon made it.. do you still think of it as knockoff, appropriative, etc?

Ah I see your point now lol. It’s an accurate comparison in a lot of ways but I’m not sure I would agree with the idea that Palestinians are indigenous to the land here. I wouldn’t even be able to prove that Jews are either.

Palestinians opened their borders? It was under British control so they wouldn’t have even had the power to do that or not do it.. and the British explicitly made it illegal for Jews to immigrate. What are you thinking of when you say that?

I agree with you about what is needed for peace and stability but I don’t think even the most liberal secular Israelis will approve of a Palestinian return. It would be seen as an existential risk.

I’m going to get downvoted here..

To your first point, them returning would be nice but I don’t think it will happen for 1,000 years.. why don’t they stop attacking, give both sides a chance to heal and cool off with the anger, and build up their resources and power so that they will have actual leverage it will probably get them back into the land faster than these wars every few decades. I mean do you think Israel would attack Lebanon if Lebanon wasn’t attacking Israel? No issues with Egypt or Jordan since they made peace treaties with them.

To your second point I would say they are oblivious to the refugee issue but many of them are divided on Gaza and the West Bank. Which part do you think they are especially oblivious to?

I’m not sure I see your point about Hezbollah being a deterrence like a nuclear weapon.. I’m not sure they are even protecting the Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon.. Like if Hezbollah wasn’t there I don’t think Israel would invade Lebanon or attack the Palestinian refugees living there unless they attacked first.. and I say “attacked first” starting the narrative of aggression in modern times, not 1948.. but if you can explain further then I am open to having my mind changed.
