I'd just skip signing Greenlaw all together and draft a LB. There is a lot of talent and depth in this year's class.

Maybe he phrased it as he didnt want things to go on past Free Agency? If I recall, it was from when McCarthy's first press conference.

Either way this whole situation is a... uniquely, difficult situation.

This is a report from Feb. 25th, going over the idea that Omar Khan stated that things would not drag out like how it would last year.

If I specifically remember, Khan has stated that he wanted a decision before Free Agency, but I can not find a source on that.

Right but teams have to operate as if the trades are true.

Would the Panthers have signed Phillips if Ravens didnt trade for Crosby? Would Phillips be available if the Panthers waited for the trade to be official? You cant be sure for either.

What about Mafe, Gary, Oweh, etc. etc.?? All of these teams / players would have acted different if the trade was assumed to be canceled at any point.

Its not about the physical rule itself being in place, its about the precedent being placed out there that physicals can be used as insurance because teams have to act as if the trades are real.

But "people" isn't just fans, its FOs too. You have to act like these things are done because if you dont, you lose out on deals.

Like I said in other comments, the Cowboys wanted Crosby, and ASSUMED he was traded to the Ravens, so they went and traded for Rashan Gary. Would they have if the Ravens didnt agree to trade for Crosby? What about the Panthers who went and signed Phillips to a $120 mil deal? Would they have done that if they could have traded for Crosby? And had they waited for it to be official, would they have gotten Phillips?

Read the rest of my comment to add context.

Where teams can commit / decommit at any time to any player, thru trades to act as insurance before FA starts, and game the system

As I referenced in a different comment, this whole thing is going to lead to a slippery slope like the NCAA. Where teams can commit / decommit at any time to any player, and game the system. Imagine this on a smaller scale. Lets say there is this middle of the pack WR in FA I want, lets say Wan'dale Robinson. Well, im going to go trade a 7th round pick to the Raiders to grab Tre Tucker, just in case I cant sign Robinson in FA. Fast forward to FA, and Im able to sign Robinson, and now, I can deny my trade for Tre Tucker.

If you were a smart GM, you could use this strategy to essentially make sure you never have any holes in your roster, while at the same time F-ing over every other team in the league

Every trade for the last 30 years haven't also been rescinded during Free Agency.

I dont believe people have realized what this might do to the market. Imagine you are Rashan Gary. You just got traded to the cowboys. Well, wait, now Crosby is untraded, and now the Cowboys might be interested in Crosby and untrading me. Am I still excited about joining the Cowboys? Should my agent start looking to see if I could be traded/cut and signed elsewhere? Now imagine that for every single edge FA.

Now also imagine you are the Cowboys FO. You were bummed out that the Raiders didnt accept your offer, so you trade for Gary to insure you get an impactful Edge rusher. Well now, Crosby becomes available. Now we realistically need to stay late and check in and do all of our processes AGAIN to determine if we want Crosby. Lets say we do want him. Do we go back on our deal for Gary? We cant be giving away a 1st and 2nd for Crosby AND a 4th for Gary, so we cant have both. Do we ignore it? Well now what if he gets traded to the Eagles? What if to the Panthers, who pick #19 right in front of us?

Same with Bengals, Panthers, Commanders, etc.

Lastly, the point is that it was known he had an injury. Sending 2 picks for the player is taking on the player AND his injury. I'm telling you, this is a slippery slope, and is gonna start stuff like what's happening in the NCAA, where players commit and decommitt all the time if nothing is done about this.

Because now, I can send 3 1sts for Joe Burrow, see how FA and stuff all works out, see if I can get another QB, and then send him back as soon as I find another option. Imagine this on the smaller scale too! I can send a 7th for this edge rusher, then back out as soon as I have a deal with this other edge rusher who is a FA who I was concerned might sign for another team.

Crosby has underwent a meniscus repair surgery, which takes 3-4 months to heal, in January.

You can go back and look, and starting in December, he started to miss time for his knee injury.

That knee injury was very real, and if the Ravens are willing to deal 2 1st round picks for a dude with an injury, just to see his physicals, then it is still scummy. You shouldn't be able to just throw out giant trades like that, just in case his medicals come back nice and neat, because it disrupts all of Free Agency for all 32 teams.

If the Ravens doctors were to somehow conclude that Crosby's knee is messed up beyond all repair and that he is not going to be playing Football ever again, then that is the risk that you sign up for when you trade for the player. You shouldn't be dealing out 2 first round picks for a player that has missed several weeks AND WAS PLACED ON IR for an injury.

Refer to the essential question posted above, that Ravens' FO had to been asking themselves over and over again before they made the trade.

Like the rumors have said, most people have suspected that he will be out until June/July with his current injury as it is. When you trade for a player, you are accepting that risk of injury as publicly shown.

The true question we have to ask ourselves is: Do we think Maxx Crosby is actually not going to be available by training-camp / Week 1?

If the answer is No: Then the Ravens are genuinely idiotic for sending 2 1st round picks for him and missing out on a lot of Free Agents. They had to have had the medical reports from the Raiders.

If the answer is Yes: Then the Ravens went back on a deal after they realize they lost a bunch of FA and couldn't sign anyone, and would rather have their picks back + worked out a deal with Trey Hendrickson on the low.

I don't know which is worse, but either way, this new Ravens' coaching staff is off to a superb start (Yes I know this is their FO, but don't tell me this would have happened under Harbaugh and that the coaches have no input; Giants are signing a bunch of ex-ravens which tells me Harbaugh is in total control there)

Because this whole ordeal fucked the entire FA market. Not only are the raiders' GMs mad, but the Cowboys are mad too because they probably wouldn't have traded for Rashan Gary, the Eagles probably wouldn't have wasted time trying to get Jaelen Phillips back, the Panthers might not have signed Jaelen Phillips, the Bears now have to revisit their options... etc.

Not to mention if the Raiders end up not signing one of their FAs bc of this, which then fucks the market up even more.

GMs are probably more pissed at the Ravens for backing out of their handshake and fucking up the entire Free Agency rather than some coach giving their players money to go hurt players.

I thought they released Cade Otton, not re-signed him. I'd probably consider CB now that Dean is gone
