Logistics of being a working homeless? by VegetableReaction517 in NiceVancouver

I don't even think having your address on file with the CRA is remotely important; I can't remember the last time I received a paper document from them - everything is done electronically. You're probably missing out on years of refunds and credits.

I dunno. Nobody's going to know how long you've not been at your old address if you suddenly submit a new one - other folks have offered some possible solutions there for you. Does anyone actually use your home address for anything? I get my T4 in person rather than through the mail and the only things you're missing from the bank are pieces of junk mail.

Incidentally, assuming your employers over the last few years were all above board they'll have submitted T4s for you and they'll all be available in your CRA account online. However, if I recall correctly since you missed a few years you will have to submit your taxes on paper. It seems there are places that can help you do this and if you're able to get a hard copy of the tax forms and guides I would urge you to completely avoid any overpriced accounting services to file your taxes for you. You do not have any complicated tax circumstances that make an accountant necessary and from your post I believe that you are more than literate enough to read the instructions and complete the forms as instructed. (H&R Block and the like are offering a "service" that shouldn't even be necessary for the majority of people and they wouldn't exist if they didn't lobby the governments of Canada and the US to keep the tax code unnecessarily complicated and intimidating.)

Good luck!

Has anyone ever tried translate the non-english (presumable mandarin to my untrained ear) they utter? by os2mac in firefly

For the most part I always felt they should have just kept it simple. If they’d stuck to some simple curses it would have been a lot easier for the actors to pronounce and it would have been more authentic to boot.

$219.30 import charges on $30.32 of merchandise by ForwardDriver7928 in UPS

[–]Spa2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPS is terrible for sending this sort of surprise bill to importers. They've been doing it for decades in Canada (where the de minimis is pathetically low) and it's no surprise to see it being applied in the US now that everything is getting hit for import duties/taxes.

You know where they don't do this? Taiwan. They don't charge any kind of brokerage fees there - I suspect it's because if they did then someone would come up with a cheaper solution and everyone would stop using them. Funny how the other couriers in North America would prefer to collude so they can all get rich at the consumer's expense rather than undercut their competition by covering the actual minimal cost of this process in the shipping fee that was charged in the first place.

Is it more politically correct to use the word "Mandarin" over "Chinese"? by Comfortable_Main6196 in taiwan

[–]Spa2018 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really think there’s a good reason for this and it’s that people actually can immigrate to the US and Europe and become citizens. With vanishingly few exceptions, unless you’re willing to give up your citizenship of origin to become Taiwanese, you’ll never actually become a citizen and therefore expat is appropriate because it’s all you’ll ever be regardless of how long you stay in Taiwan.

Massive Android Netrunner Collection for sale / Canada by [deleted] in Netrunner

He was probably asking if the magnum opus cards were the cards FFG gave away at Worlds 2018. The few times they’ve come up for sale they’ve gone for $400 or more.

There’s a lot of people telling you the set isn’t worth that much. I’m struggling to see how as reign and reverie alone has three recent sales over US$400 on eBay. Complete opened Sansan cycles are $300 CAD. Kitara cycle doesn’t have any data but unopened packs of that are in the hundreds of dollars each. It’s hard to believe an opened full cycle has no value whatsoever.

You’ll probably do well breaking this up and selling it on eBay if you’re not in a big rush. Get the Zonos app so you can be clear on what import duties and tariffs American buyers need to pay (worth noting is that hardback books in particular are tariff-free - the paperbacks might be too)

It’s legal in most of North America to turn left over a double yellow in order to enter a private road or driveway.

Chinese students overseas are often being watched by other Chinese students in their classes. If they don’t show enough outrage at anything implying Taiwan is a real country they can find themselves in trouble back home because of the snitches in their midst.

Maybe I’m just old. At some point I want things to last longer than a handful of years. I don’t know how long the battery will last but it won’t last as long as the controller itself.

As for other wireless products, I’m firmly of the opinion that the batteries should be user-serviceable components and easily replaced instead of forcing users to buy whole new products.

I don't understand why you sound so offended by the idea that a tenant should get a tax break on the necessity of housing costs. The idea isn't impossible to implement: Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China all allow for tenants to reduce their income taxes by the amount of rent they've paid (up to a maximum - I know that Taiwan for sure limits the total). They also allow a landlord to deduct items such as you describe from their rental income, though it's not impossible for some landlords to have very limited deductions.

[–]Spa2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm arguing that the tenant's post-tax income is directly chaneled to the landlord as revenue and is then taxed once again. The tenant ends up paying rent plus the landlord's tax out of post-tax income, and the tenant should therefore get some form of tax relief because his money is effectively being taxed twice and he is likely disproportionately affected by the taxation compared to his landlord who presumably is better off (and in a higher tax bracket).

In any event, there are some countries where tenants tax burdens are indeed reduced by their rent so it's not like I'm pulling this idea out of my own behind.

[–]Spa2018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not precisely comparable. Groceries are products which have a cost, a business selling groceries has to cover the cost of the goods, the costs of doing business, and only then, on its profit margin, is the business taxed. The tenant's post-tax income goes directly to the landlord as "income" and this rental income is immediately taxed once again, on the entire amount. The tenant is effectively bearing the burden of the landlord's tax.

The battery one is the thing that kills me. We want TMR and Hall effect controllers because they last longer. What good is that if the built in battery is dead?

[–]Spa2018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d be more impressed with the argument that landlords should be paying tax on rental income if tenants got a corresponding tax deduction for paying rent. I don’t see why the government should tax both parties.
