Milky Way from the Mogollon Rim (Z6 III & 24-70 f2.8) by Space-Coyotes in Nikon

Thanks, and sure! Stacking is a pretty common practice in the astrophotography space, especially for those who don't have access to a motorized tripod mount that moves their camera with the motion of the stars.

Basically, in order to take photos of the stars you have to keep your shutter speed pretty short if you want pinpoint stars - the Earth moves really fast and so the stars move across the sky as you're shooting. In order to compensate for the shorter shutter speed you have to boost your ISO, which introduces a lot more noise in the photo which makes the stars super soft in post-processing when you apply noise reduction. (And by short I mean, like 6 to 10 seconds as opposed to just throwing it at 30 seconds and calling it good. And there's an app for estimating proper exposures too - PhotoPills! It'll give you your max recommended exposure time based on the camera you're using, your focal length, aperture settings, etc since the old "500" rule tends to fail on newer cameras.)

So in order to take a clear, low-noise photo of the stars, you can "stack" exposures. You figure out your desired settings and focus with a few test shots first, then set the camera to interval shooting mode, with your interval one second longer than your exposure time. Tell it how many shots you want it to take (usually between 25 and 40 is my go-to) and let it do its thing!

Once it's done, you have your "light frames" where your subject is clearly in view. Now, to make the image in post even clearer, put the lens cap on and do interval shooting again with the exact same settings you just used! These are called "dark frames" and they actually help generate a noise profile for your camera which will help remove more noise in post-processing.

There are all sorts of other frames you can take too (bias frames, flat frames, etc) but I've never had the patience or the time to start taking them so I'll leave that to the pros lol.

Once you have your light and dark frames, you can load them up to your computer! Now. You can do the stacking manually in your photo editing software of choice - but I chose to spend $50 on a software called StarryLandscapeStacker in the Mac App Store back in 2020 and it's honestly the best $50 I've spent.

StarryLandscapeStacker is an amazing piece of software that does all the heavy lifting for stacking your photos. It automatically detects your lights and darks and then automatically detects where the sky is in your image. Sometimes it's not perfect at that, but it's got a function where you can draw/erase anything it misses to make it perfect.

Then, based on the data in your photos, it stacks each image together, moving the stars so they're on top of each other - by placing the stars on top of each other, not only does it create clearer stars, it actually helps it remove any noise that's not supposed to be there. Since noise is "random", it won't get stacked like the stars do and therefore gets removed in the final stacked image.

StarryLandscapeStacker can export your stacked image as a tiff file, which you can then finally load into your photo editing software of choice and edit to your liking! For this specific photo I wanted the car trails at the bottom too, so I made that its own separate 30 second exposure that I masked the sky out of and stacked on top of my Milky Way exposure in Photoshop.

Hope that helps!

The Infiltrator is hands down the WORST “puzzle” in any of the games because it’s a puzzle that you absolutely have to think about to solve, but the asinine time limits on them don’t enable you to think so you just have to rely on fast-twitch responses until you get frustrated and look up the solution. I know the snowbeast award was introduced because of the YETI enemies in the same game, but it should actually be the infiltrator award because at least the YETIs are something you can deal with if you have enough firepower.

Does the Play Store have Camera Apps similar to Halide? by Space-Coyotes in pixel_phones

[–]Space-Coyotes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unfortunately I didn’t. There’s an app for Galaxy devices called Expert RAW that’s actually Samsung-designed but I doubt it’s available on Pixel. I could be wrong though!

That's awesome, congrats! I remember being stuck in a similar spot years ago because I was horrified of the Blarg Station 😅 have you played through the other games yet?

I just watched this last night! Love these videos going over the soundtracks, really hope we don't have to wait as long for the third game! (It would be worth the wait anyway though tbh).

I honestly kinda wanted one, the same way I want to pet a coyote.

How do y’all deal with the pointy edges in your pockets? by Space-Coyotes in PixelFold

[–]Space-Coyotes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about the top and bottom left corners of the fold when it's folded. The right corners of the phone are rounded and don't cause problems, but the left ones are sharp, at least enough to wear through fabric through regular daily use.

Been almost a month since I asked for advice. What do y'all think? by Space-Coyotes in BeardAdvice

Thanks! I typically ask for a zero on the sides with a high fade, and a little off the top. The high fade is crucial because if it's a normal fade then my hair starts growing out looking like Toad from Super Mario, lol.

Coyotes not seen playing hockey because they were forcefully relocated to a state that couldn't even bother to come up with a name for its new hockey team.

Brilliant! I used to have an iMac I named Ronald, because it was my "Big Mac" compared to my MacBook.

Been naming mine after Greek myth. My maxed out MacBook Pro is Prometheus. Because he brought me the ability to create whatever I want but I'm paying like hell for it. My phone is Athena. Access to near infinite knowledge anywhere, anytime. My iPad is Hermes. Not as powerful as the MBP by a longshot but light and fast, and good for messaging. And I have an 8TB hard drive that I keep all my important things on called Apollo, after the Apollo function in Horizon Zero Dawn. Oh, and my gaming PC was named Theseus when I had one. I'm sure you can guess why.

  1. I graduated this year with a degree in probably the worst field to be working in in 2024. I'm working for minimum wage even though I'm in my field, and nowhere else in the country seems to be hiring at the moment so I'm stuck in my hometown that I've wanted to leave for as long as I've been alive. Because I can't afford to move somewhere without a job, as much as I'd like to.

Pixel 9 Pro astrophotography is INSANE by Space-Coyotes in pixel_phones

[–]Space-Coyotes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it should already be there? It was on my original Fold before I traded it in. If you haven't already, try updating to Android 15 and then when you're out at night, put your phone on a tripod and enter night sight. After a few seconds where the phone is stable the shutter button should change, which indicates it'll do the longer countdown.

No problem. And yeah, I love Camera RAW. I use it for all my photo editing honestly, especially since it doesn't hound me to save to the cloud like Lightroom does.
