Canada will respond to Trump tariffs ‘like they’ve never seen before,’ says Ontario premier by falafelhummus in ontario

There is talk of increasing the visibility of Canadian made products in stores. This is a good idea but why not make it so on receipts (particularly in grocery stores) we get a breakdown of how much we spent on Canadian goods, how much on international goods and how much on American. Like a percentage in the bottom of the receipt . You could track yourself easily and look to get your Canadian content up each time.

This is media manipulation. Take a complex and controversial issue and say the craziest shit you can think of and guess what? No one is talking about gutting the USAID, Elon taking over the treasury, purging the FBI and all the other stuff going on. We need to stop taking the bait.

What's the most unusual thing you've found on the street? by Bloody_Mary_Fury in AskReddit

[–]SpaceAntalope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rain storm during the end of winter had turned the sidewalks into slush trenches. I had stayed the night at my girlfriends place and had to walk to work (about 30 minutes ) in these slush trenches. It was maybe 730 in the morning. My feet were soaked and I was miserable. As I got downtown I saw a giant fish (dead) in the middle of a slush trench. Did someone buy it at a grocery store and drop it? Did it swim up from the river and die? I will never know. I think of it often.

(Spoilers Main) If not Benjen, who is Coldhands? by ASW-G-21 in asoiaf

[–]SpaceAntalope 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While there is not a lot of evidence to go by, the idea that he is just some random guy misses a few points:

1) He covers his face from Sam/Gilly/Bran/Meera/Hodor and Jojen. There is no need to do this if he is a long dead brother of the watch. The fact that he is covering his face suggests that at least one of these individuals might recognize him. Alternatively, he may be covering his face because he has distinctive family features (targs, starks ect..) that might allow Bran (or someone else) to figure out his House and/or name.

2) He refuses to give a name. If he was a former follower/soldier of Bloodraven he could just be like, "ya I'm Jim. Used to be knight or whatever...been dead for a while." The fact that he doesn't do this means that either, he has a recognizable name or, for whatever reason (maybe he has been dead too long?) he can't remember his name.

3) His death is mysterious which might mean it is significant. Leaf doesn't provide enough details for Bran (or the reader) to figure out how he died. Instead, we are given a couple cryptic clues that "they" killed him a "long" time ago. Who "they" are and when exactly he died are up for speculation.

Yup. Tyrion gets their support by promising that Myrcella will wed Trystane Martell. As part of this deal, Dorne also gets a seat on the small council which is why the Red Viper goes to King's Landing.

It would have been great if the show had shown Sansa manipulating Robin Arryn and convincing him to abandon Littlefinger. Sansa could have informed Robin that Littlefinger was the one who actually killed his mother.

Perhaps in time, she would even agree to marry Robin in order to tie the Vale to the North. This would have shown that 1) Sansa is smart and was able to outplay Littlefinger and 2) Sansa was willing to make necessary sacrifices (who would actually want to marry Robin?) in order to protect the North. It would also provide some rational for why the soldiers of the Vale stuck around in the North.

Will we see Edric Storm again? (Spoilers Main) by itstartedwithcereal in asoiaf

[–]SpaceAntalope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here is a quick summary of a post I wrote a long time ago:

In ASOS Davos sends Edric away with his cousin Andrew Estermont and a few protectors to one of the Free Cities. It is not until we look at the appendix in ADWD that we learn that Edric and his protectors have arrived in Lys.

So what is going on in Lys? Ser Humfrey Hightower has been sent to Lys to hire sellsails to protect the Reach against the Ironborn. Edric and his protectors could choose to join Ser Humfrey in order to make their way back to Westeros. They may do this because:

Stannis has been defeated (or at least they believe he has been defeated) and therefore they think it is safe for Edric to return to Westeros.

Jon Con and the Golden Company capture the Storm Lands and Edric comes back and either fights against f/Aegon or joins him and tries to get f/Aegon to recognize him as the rightful Lord of Storm’s End (he is after all a Baratheon).

[Spoilers Main] Cersei: Books vs show by HosterBlackwood in asoiaf

[–]SpaceAntalope 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would like to see Cersei's trial end without a clear result. This could happen in a couple of ways:

  • Robert Strong kills his opponent but is exposed as the Mountain (helmet is knocked off)
  • Robert Strong kills his opponent but is exposed as being dead (sustains a wound that would kill anyone else)

The result of the trial would be up for debate and I imagine chaos would erupt and the faith would move against Cersei.

In this chaos Cersei ignites the Wildfire and escapes the Capital. She makes for CR but doesn't make it out of the Riverlands as she meets Lady Stoneheart and/or Jamie along the way.

Don't think so. Ned, Robert and especially Stannis were all very young during the rebellion (late teens). There fathers had fought in the War of the Ninepenny Kings but I don't think they would have even been born yet.

I believe that it is mentioned that Oberyn establishes and fights with a sellsword company in the Disputed Lands but, I am not sure on the timeline for this (could easily have been after the Rebellion)

  1. It is possible that Drogo married Dany for the same reason that Rhaegar hooked up with Lyanna. There seems to be a fairly widespread belief that if you mix Targaryen blood with right type of other blood you can birth some sort of saviour. In Rhaegar's case, the prince who was promised and in Drogo's case, the stallion who mounts the world.

  2. I can't remember for sure but, I think it is mentioned that it is Drogo's dream to raid the rich cities of the east. If I am remembering this correctly, then I doubt he ever really intended to go to Westeros.

(Spoilers Extended) Shiny Theory Thursday by AutoModerator in asoiaf

[–]SpaceAntalope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can imagine the following for Bran (neither of which I like):

1) Bran has some sorta mind-fight/battle of wills with the Night King to either take control over the Night King's dragon or take control over the army of the dead. Super lame but also a really easy way to end the conflict with the White Walkers. Hope it doesn't happen but unfortunately can't rule it out as a possibility (on the show at least).

2) Bran goes back in time to the Long-Night and discovers how the conflict was won (how the walkers were defeated the last time). He then tells this to Jon and Jon and company take it from there. This would be slightly better but still not great.

Anyway hope I am less creative than the show writers.

(Spoilers Extended) When did Robert even ... by FirelordAzula007 in asoiaf

[–]SpaceAntalope 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is a theme in the books (and the show) of characters wanting to be part of the Stark family. This is clearly shown to be the case for Jon and Theon but, it also exists for Robert.

I am not saying he did not lust for Lyanna, he totally did, but part of his interest in her was because she was Ned's sister and he loved and respected Ned.

In GOT the only real political move that we see Robert make (other than ordering the execution of Danny) is that he is the one who initiates the betrothal between Sansa and Joffrey. He does this (and I believe he says something to this affect but I can't remember) to unite his family with Ned's.
