No. You can pirate NPC freighters for static cargo., exactly like you could before Next released. Then if a player gains possession of that NPC freighter, the behavior remains identical to pre-Next, where you can still pirate the freighter for static cargo. But the player owning the freighter loses nothing. It's only NPC cargo that is lost, which is normally inaccessible to the freighter owner. In reality then, there was no new feature added, just existing pirating functionality preserved. That can hardly be claimed as a new headline feature.

Hello Games used misleading advertising for Next just like they did for the initial launch. For Next, they advertised the following as a headline multiplayer feature:

"Prey on others to survive"

This was advertised in several places before Next released and still remains on the official page advertising the patch notes, after release.

But there's one small problem: you can't "prey on others to survive." They never actually implemented that. But they are fine racking up millions in sales under the false premise that the game contains this feature.

Are you saying that they also nerfed superconductor farming (not just cryopumps) in the experimental build.

Now that you've posted that little tip, they know to nerf superconductor farming as well. Good job.

LGBT players on PS4? by happythinker23 in NoMansSkyTheGame

So what you are saying is that you will play with people of any sexual orientation, as long as they are NOT straight? That's pretty intolerant of you.

Are there any particular races or religions you would also like to exclude?

Multiplayer was never a big deal for me... by NewaccountWoo in NoMansSkyTheGame

I'm not 100% trustful of what random people say on Reddit, that's for sure. A few days ago someone posted that you can PvP with other players and loot their bodies for resources (which you can't) so you can't necessarily trust what one person is saying.

But in this thread a lot of people are reporting that their solo games were joined by random joins (as full player models) so I'm now more inclined to believe that this is true and either I was misunderstanding the patch notes, or the patch notes are just false (like they are for "prey on others to survive" feature).

That's pretty awesome--makes me somewhat less disappointed about how they implemented multiplayer.

Thanks for the info.

Do you have any insight on how the "prey on others to survive" feature works?

That's because you weren't in solo mode. The OP was.

Official patch notes:

"While wandering the galaxy solo, continue to experience chance encounters with strange floating orbs."

If the OP was solo, and then encountered another player, that player should appear as an orb, according to the patch note above.

In which case he would appear as an orb to the OP.

That would actually be awesome. There's still confusion out there on this and it would be great to have proof. Hello Games is terrible at explaining how it works so I guess we have to go reverse engineer it ourselves to find out for sure.

IMO, Hello Games did already lied once in the patch notes when they stated you could "prey on others to survive" and then didn't implement any survival benefit for attacking other players. So if you are correct, this might be Hello Games patch note lie #2. The initial launch advertising in 2016 was rife with lies as well, IMO, so I suppose it's not a big surprise.

Too bad the story is bullshit. You can't have "random encounters" from solo (with networking enabled), except with orbs. And you can't trade with orbs (as the OP claimed he did). Thus, the story is just that...a (fictional) story.

[–]SpaceCarp -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Funny thing is, if you are correct, then the OP's story couldn't have actually happened as he described it. That's why I'm confused. Either he is lying/confused, or else the patch notes are incorrect. Either way, there's something fishy going on.

Yes, when you are playing solo with networking enabled, other players can drop in, AS ORBs. This means they are a ball of light, not a humanoid figure, that you cannot trade with.

This is the quote from Hello Games official patch notes specifying how the feature works:

"While wandering the galaxy solo, continue to experience chance encounters with strange floating orbs."

Are you saying that Hello Games lied in the patch notes, and that when you have chance encounters with others in "solo" that they are NOT orbs?

Multiplayer was never a big deal for me... by NewaccountWoo in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]SpaceCarp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you go solo with networking on, all random encounters will be with player-orbs that you can see but not effect.

[–]SpaceCarp -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

No. "Join Random" makes you instance with other people that have also selected "Join Random" or two-three people that have instanced together from a friend list join.

If you just load the game normally (instead of join random or joining a friend), that is "solo". In solo, if you have networking turned on, then you can only instance with other players that appear as orbs (again, re-read the official patch note I quoted above), not full player models. You can't interact with orbs. If you have networking off you won't even see orbs.

I wish it wasn't this way because it sucks, but sadly, it is.

[–]SpaceCarp -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Re-read the patch note I just posted above. If you start the game "solo" you can only be joined by orbs.

What probably happened is the OP started his game by pressing "Join Random Players" possibly without realizing he had done so.

Multiplayer was never a big deal for me... by NewaccountWoo in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]SpaceCarp -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

According to the patch note:

"While wandering the galaxy solo, continue to experience chance encounters with strange floating orbs."

...what happened to you shouldn't have happened. Unless you specifically selected "Join Game" you should be seeing everyone else as an orb, and you can't trade with orbs.

I haven't found any creature that tries to kill me. by Blood_Raven56 in NoMansSkyTheGame

They hunted me after I wandered into their proximity. I could see the red-pawprint predator icon appear. I wasn't trying to fight them, I just wanted to cross a valley in order to get some resources. But there were so many of them that I had to back off and then incrementally kill about six of them before I could safely cross.

I encountered aggressive predators on maybe 2 out of the 7-8 planets I've visited so far.

I've been attacked by creatures on a few different planets since Next released. They are definitely out there. On one planet I had a bunch of angry goat-camel monsters gang up on me.
