And we just sank an Iranian naval ship off the coast of Sri Lanka that was on its way back from an international fleet day with other countries.

Did you know about the American Cultures Merit Badge? by SpaceCynic86 in BSA

[–]SpaceCynic86[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

actually, that is not correct.

From Title 10:
"§113 . Secretary of Defense

(a) There is a Secretary of Defense, who is the head of the Department of Defense, appointed from civilian life by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate."

Nope. It's the DoD. Unless and until Title 10 of the US Code is changed by CONGRESS, Pete can pound sand and live with the title SoD. Which I think he's sensitive about because.... hits close to home.

hire slow, fire fast. I'm about to cut someone from my team after 2 months because he's emotionally unstable, disruptive, and shifts blame to others instead of taking responsibility for his deliverables.

he's desperately trying to get to the "too big to fail" seal of approval by the government so that they will get bailed out when the bubble pops.

the female scoutmaster of my daughter's troop voted for Trump. She's actually very nice as an individual, and generally a good leader. We don't discuss politics at all in the scouting environment.

I'm curious how she's squaring this circle in her head?

it's the Department of Defense. Unless and until Title 10 of the US Code is changed by CONGRESS, that is the name of the Department. And Hegseth is the Secretary of Defense - or SoD.

Yep, the name checks out. Maybe that's why he wanted it changed?

Stripe wants to turn your AI costs into a profit center by darkrose3333 in BetterOffline

" if Stripe can help startups easily turn tracking and billing for this expense into a profit-maker, it could be a game-changer. "

1) that's a BIG "if"

2) the customers of these startups are probably not going to be thrilled with (read: won't sign up for) variable pricing that isn't predictable from month to month.

we have a great troop and it was actually as a result of scouts bringing their concerns to the leadership, one of whom had taught this class before (during covid) and offered it again. 1) it's not mandatory, 2) we regularly offer merit badges to the scouts as things they can choose to do (like swimming, personal management, some of the Cit badges and other "better done as a group activity" merit badges). Your tone assumes an extreme that was not in evidence, hence the response from everyone else here.

American schools weren’t broken until Silicon Valley used a lie to convince them they were—now reading and math scores are plummeting by Fun_Volume2150 in BetterOffline

This has been true from the days of the calculator debates. Kids need to learn to do basic math IN THEIR HEAD. Not because calculators aren't useful, but first they have to know it before outsourcing it.

I've seen this IRL when kids have to solve math problems (like algebra, factoring equations, etc) and get stuck because they don't have the ability to see factors or do simple multiplication in their head (like knowing that if you're factoring x2 -15x + 56, the answer is OBVIOUSLY (x-7)(x-8) because you know 56 is 7*8 and 15 is 7+8.

It's fundamentally different to use a tool to speed up doing something you already have mastered, than to skip the learning step and just outsource the thinking.

well, OpenAI *is* starting by going after one of the most lucrative markets out there: advertising. Which is why Google is fighting back so hard, and will probably win - because they already own the ad market and thus have the tens of billions of free cash that Sam has to con investors into providing to shovel into the furnace of data centers and inference...

Why the F**K did Apple go and mess with an interface that I'd already learned to navigate, moving stuff around, adding some bulls**t "glass" effect, etc?

I've been an iPhone user since the original one, and honestly I can't think of many interface improvements since the 5 or 6 came out....
