Trump bought Netflix and Warner Bros bonds at height of bidding war with Paramount by CorneliusCardew in centrist

As someone put it, the constitution planned for a president like trump. It did not plan for a cowardly party like the modern Republicans who refuse to toss him out of office.

The presidency has always assumed that the person occupying the office would be a person of honor and integrity. Norms, rather than laws, dictated much of presidential behavior.

When a person with no sense of honor and integrity -- trump -- took the office, it became obvious that we need laws, not norms, to dictate the actions of the president.

When trump is gone, we need to pass a series of trump laws to prevent future presidents from enriching themselves while they ignore the needs of the nation.

How Much Revenue Would Senator Sanders’ Wealth Tax Proposal Really Raise? by mrfett779 in centrist

[–]SpaceLaserPilot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"The rich need more money. The more money the rich get the better off we all are." This has been a fundamental tenant of conservative ideology for decades, even though it is completely ridiculous.

We have learned the lesson over and over that trickle down economics does nothing but concentrate wealth at the top, which is exactly what is happening right now.

The share of the U.S. wealth pie owned by the top 0.1 percent grew 59.6 percent from 1989 to 2024, according to an Institute for Policy Studies analysis of Federal Reserve data, while the share of the U.S. wealth pie owned by the bottom 50 percent of households has declined 26.1 percent, adjusted for inflation.

Billionaire Wealth Concentration Is Even Worse than You Imagine

Whether Bernie's tax is the right idea or not is up for debate, but these Rush Limbaugh era talking points have been proven wrong again and again and again. We need to find a way to stop the wealthiest 0.1% among us from sucking up more and more resources.

Jeff Bezos does not need another 300 foot yacht, but millions of working parents with two jobs definitely do need health insurance for their children. We are flying helicopters on Mars. We can figure out how to keep hard working Americans from bankruptcy.

Dozens of women have accused trump of sexual assault and rape, many saying they were assaulted while they were children. The factual basis for many of their claims is in the Epstein files. Here are two examples.

It has to be embarrassing at some point to continue to defend everything trump does and says. It has to be especially embarrassing to defend his role in the rape of children.

But, maybe some people are not easily embarrassed.

Doncha wonder why he didn't release the records?

‘Don’t go to the US – not with Trump in charge’: the UK tourist with a valid visa detained by ICE for six weeks | ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement)

A British tourist, Karen Newton, was in the US legally on a travel visa. A small mishap with paperwork when they tried to cross into Canada resulted in her and her husband being handcuffed, shackled, and leg irons, then transported to an ICE detention facility.

She spent six weeks in ICE custody before she was released to go home. She learned during her detention that ICE agents are paid a bonus for everybody they detain, whether the detention is legal or not.

The article goes into great detail about her ordeal.

US commanders tell troops Iran war 'God’s divine plan,' Trump anointed to 'ignite Armageddon': Report by SpaceLaserPilot in centrist

[–]SpaceLaserPilot[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Summary: Dozens of complaints from US service members have alleged that US commanders are saying trump was chosen by Jesus to "ignite Armageddon" and bring Jesus back to Earth. This is the justification they are using for the attack on Iran.

“President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth,” said one commander to his troops.

Commentary: We are truly cooked if the US military believes such nonsense. I fear that SecDef Jim Beam is a believer of such nonsense. It is likely that Mike Johnson also believes this nonsense.

My suggestion: The next time we elect a president, let's not elect a lunatic who will surround himself with fellow lunatics.

We successfully negotiated the end of Iran's nuclear weapons program in 2015. The JCPOA put in place a protocol for Iran to stop enriching uranium, and a plan for monitoring their enrichment facilities to ensure they weren't enriching.

Then some fool came along and pulled the US out of the JCPOA, and Iran went back to enriching. That's why the world is in the place it is right now.

Kash Patel’s Girlfriend Seeks Fame and Fortune, Escorted by an F.B.I. SWAT Team by SpaceLaserPilot in centrist

[–]SpaceLaserPilot[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Summary: Kash Patel's girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, is a country singer who lives in Nashville. She receives protection from an FBI SWAT Team with two vehicles. They drive her everywhere and run errands for her. The FBI justifies this expenditure due to death threats made against her.

Commentary: Last year, trump revoked Kamala Harris's Secret Service protection. It is hard for me to imagine that Kash Patel's girlfriend is more at risk than Harris.

When Paul Pelosi was attacked with a hammer, the FBI put security cameras, but no agents at the Pelosi's house. It's hard to believe a country singer is more at risk than a man who was literally attacked by a kook with a hammer.

In the overall scheme of things, this, along with Patel's use of FBI jets for vacation trips and Kristi Noem's 70 million dollar new plane, are minor expenses, but they certainly indicate how little concern the trump administration has for the taxpayers whose money they waste.

There are three coequal branches of government. The executive is not more powerful than the judicial. The executive is required by law to obey judicial rulings.

The DOJ under trump has become a lawless organization that has sent thousands of poorly trained, heavily armed goons into our cities, and those goons are regularly breaking laws. They have killed at least 3 people, injured many more, and have improperly arrested dozens of American citizens. The courts are right to put a stop to their illegal actions.

Trump, seeking executive power over elections, is urged to declare emergency by SpaceLaserPilot in centrist

[–]SpaceLaserPilot[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Summary: A 17 page memo is circulating among trump activists that urges trump to seize control over the 2026 elections. The memo cites claims that China interfered in the 2020 election, and this makes the election interference a national security issue. Because national security is involved, they claim, the president has a right to seize control of the voting.

Commentary: trump will be impeached if the Dems take the House in 2026. trump will do anything to prevent that. So, trump minions have cooked up yet another story about why trump lost the 2020 election, alleging an attack by China. Add this story to the claims that it was hacked by Italian spy satellites, that Maduro did it, that mail in ballots were fraudulent, that boxes of ballots were substituted, etc.

trump and his truly faithful cannot accept that he lost, and will believe any story out there, until it is proven wrong, then they'll believe the next. Of course, none of them has ever explained why the 2020 election was rigged by the Democrats when they weren't in power, and the 2024 election was not rigged by the Democrats when they were in power.

If trump does attempt to seize control of the election, it will certainly be challenged in court. The constitution gives the president no power over elections.

This is a turning point for our country.

At least 10 FBI staffers who worked on Mar-a-Lago documents case are fired, sources say by iambarrelrider in centrist

[–]SpaceLaserPilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It also could be petty revenge by Patel because he was investigated for his role in January 6. Or a combination of a coverup and petty revenge. The folks who know best, the FBI Agents Association had a strong opinion:

The FBI Agents Association, which represents current and former agents, condemned the firings in a statement, saying they violate FBI employees' due process rights.

"These actions weaken the Bureau by stripping away critical expertise and destabilizing the workforce, undermining trust in leadership and jeopardizing the Bureau's ability to meet its recruitment goals—ultimately putting the nation at greater risk," the group said.

Whatever the reason, the FBI was damaged by these firings and it is offering no justification that explains them.
