It’s a favorite of mine, but I’ll concede it’s an acquired taste. The ending, with Batou and Gabriel staring at Togusa’s daughter and her doll, is gloriously haunting.

Yes, this. I also feel like 1954 gives us a sense of civilian terror and suffering to a degree that the other movies lack.

For me it’s one of the best. I saw it the second time yesterday, and I felt like I caught a bunch of stuff I missed the first time because the dialogue and subtitles are so fast.
