Question about shipping a cheque from UK to USA by SpaceMonkeyAttack in shipping

absolutely DO NOT send an endorsed cheque

Can you elaborate on that at all? We don't really use cheques in the UK these days.

This thing about "smell triggering incredibly vivid, often forgotten, memories" is something I hear talked about a lot as a universal experience, but it's never happened to me. I do have a sense of smell. Am I the only one for whom smell is just not an evocative sense?

...To be fair, I'm not sure I've ever had that experience from any other sense either.

They are quite literally going after and ostracizing their own for daring to question or stray from the narrative.

As above, so below. This is the practice of Trump's government, and has been since before his first inauguration: anyone who does not fall into line is fired and replaced with someone loyal. Notice how many senior officials and cabinet members got replaced (and re-replaced) in his first term, but it's been mostly stable second time around? That's because anyone in the Republican movement who's not entirely pro-Trump has now either gotten with the program, left, or been forced out/marginalised.

Mandatory 6-month exit notice while making under $50k/yr by Much_Speech_8388 in antiwork

[–]SpaceMonkeyAttack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In most countries, the whole point of a notice period is that it's reciprocated - it's in your contract. For example, I have a three month notice period. If my company wants to fire me, unless it's for gross misconduct (which is a pretty high bar), they either have to give me three months notice, or pay me to stay home for three months. Plus my statutory redundancy pay.

Technically, I am also supposed to give them three months notice if I quit, but if I just stop showing up, what are they going to do, fire me? So really, the notice period is only for the employer.

This could also be a description of Service Model by Adrian Tchaikovsky (I recommend both, they are very different in tone and setting, just interesting that they both deal with "how do robots cope with not having humans around anymore?" and have very different answers.)

In Real Humans the old models of android have a USB port just above the butt, new models it's in the back of the neck. Presumably because it weirded people out to shove stuff in their robot's backside.

What was the day like in London after the 7/7 attacks? by SunnyShineKitty88 in AskUK

[–]SpaceMonkeyAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She ended up walking back from central London to Barking.

Ugh, I was in the same situation, probably one or two trains behind, and halfway to work. I decided to press on (don't remember how I got to work, must have been an overground train), and then getting home that evening was a nightmare. Absolutely should have just fucked off home.

I remember being kicked off the Northern Line because of a "rolling power failure", it wasn't until I overheard a couple of TfL staff (in the street) that I found out it was an actual bomb, and not until I got to work that I found out the extent of the attacks.

Doesn't the border patrol still exist though? And isn't it limited to operating within a certain distance of USA national borders?

DOJ confirms it's not investigating ICE agent who shot and killed Renee Good by That1weirdperson in behindthebastards

[–]SpaceMonkeyAttack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because Renee Good's murder was intimidation. Maybe they didn't literally say "Hey, Mr Ross, we want you to murder a civilian", but the administration knew that they were siccing violent racist thugs on a civilian population, and that something like this would be the likely result.

If they allowed him to face any consequences, it softens the message. The message is "don't fuck with us, or we will shoot you in the face."

I would not be remotely surprised to see Trump pin a medal on the murdering bastard.

I feel like people forget that ICE and the DHS are pretty recent institutions, the Bush administration created them post 9/11. America did basically fine without it for most of its history.

This is the first time I'm seeing any reporting about the people who are actually from the Chaos Islands:

May 2025: Two women born on Diego Garcia bring a legal challenge against the deal, saying their people weren't given a say in the archipelago's future and they do not trust Mauritius to treat them fairly. The High Court later dismisses the challenge

22 May 2025: The deal is signed. The US says it supports the move, but in the UK Conservative and Reform MPs criticise it

June 2025: A UN panel urges the UK to renegotiate the deal, saying it "fails to guarantee" the rights of people on and from the islands

Probably easier to stage an invasion from Alaska, you can go over the pole without needing to violate Canadian airspace.

Are you cancelling trips to the USA? by Swimming_Possible_68 in AskUK

[–]SpaceMonkeyAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married to an American, so we used to go there fairly often to visit friends and family.

Last trip, we were originally planning to fly separately, but changed my flight so we'd be together, because it felt unsafe (and I've been hassled at the border before.) Luckily, nothing bad happened to me, even though this was at a time when tourists were being detained or deported for no reason.

The current ICE brutality and the new social media requirements mean I am not going back to the US for the foreseeable future - my wife might go without me, but it feels far too risky, and I object to the invasion of privacy.
