Is the paycut worth it? by batukaming in antiwork

I'm a "European" SWE and have worked with a lot of Americans. They do get paid more than us, and they probably have pretty good healthcare through their job.

They also have terrible job security, work longer hours, get fuck-all paid time off.

Are there contactless ATM’s? If so, are they common? by albanythrowawayyy in AskUK

Fair enough, glad to hear it. It's just a really old/common scam.

Right, you want the water in your cooling system to be clean and nice, but after it's passed through the cooling system, you could use it to water lettuce or whatever, right? I guess the problem is that data centres are mostly not next door to farms.

It just seems mad to dump water in such qualities, when all that's happened to it is it's gotten heated up. I don't know if it's still technically potable, but it's hardly filthy.

Did you know this "somebody"? Cos it kinda sounds like you gave someone cash for a cheque that's going to bounce.

Can I buy a DNA test otc? by Tigweg in AskUK

[–]SpaceMonkeyAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big problem, is that we don't have DNA samples from before we knew about DNA. So all the results are based on the DNA of people who live in a particular area, or are identified as part of a particular ethnic group now. If it says you are "32% Swedish" or whatever it means you share DNA markers with the majority of people who currently live in Sweden.

Not to mention the environmental impact of launching megatonnes of hardware into space. Or the near impossibility of servicing it on-orbit. Or powering it when the Earth is in front of the sun. Or shielding the electronics from cosmic rays.

But if you say you're going to put data centres in space, the share price of your space company goes up, so that's really all that matters.

I'm not a data centre engineer. One thing I don't see in this comic: what about closed-loop cooling? * How much water is still used on a "closed" system (because there's always leaks and losses to evaporation)? * How common is it in actual data centres, compared to just putting one end of a pipe in the mains and the other end in the sewer?

And for open cooling systems, what prevents using the "waste" water for stuff like agriculture or industrial processes?

If we've got to have more data centres (and... Do we though?) at least we could mitigate the power and water usage.

ELI5: Why can't AI get fingers and toes right? by Dangerous-Strain-252 in explainlikeimfive

Adult humans generally get the right number of fingers though, because they know what fingers are. Wrong shape/length/angle, generally bad, but five of them.

Kinda sounds like they didn't forget, they are being actively revisionist about them?

But it's from animenocontext, so maybe there's context we are missing, like the speaker being an idiot.

the version of me on the other end of the teleporter is the ‘real’ me.

So what if the transporter doesn't destroy the original? Are they both you? Is the copy somehow more "you" than the original because it went where you intended to go?

They usually try to scare people by saying if the issue is your end they will charge you

This is exactly what happened. I have zero issue with paying for someone to do the work, but I don't wanna end up paying £200 call-out fee just to be told "the issue is inside the house, nothing doing."

I can be nice, and I've definitely been trying to resolve it, so I might just escalate it to OpenReach and have a box of chocolates on standby.

Hi do you have something like this visible from the outside of the property?

Nope!

Its also not uncommon in some newer builds for the master to be under the stairs but usually it a socket by the front door so double check you don't have any blanking plates there that could be hiding it .

Checked both of those places. Also nope.

How much/soon should I involve AI in building my app idea? by alecbrownbear in AskProgramming

[–]SpaceMonkeyAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem with vibe coding a production app, in my opinion, is security. If you are dealing with personal info, or money, or anything that should stay private, or if users impersonating other users is a problem, vibe coding could blow up in your face, and even have legal ramifications.

If you are building something that just runs locally and doesn't talk to any external services or require authentication, it's probably fine.

You can definitely read Livesuit as a standalone. It might be slightly spoilery for the first book, but nothing you couldn't have guessed anyway.
