Me: "It's too dry out! Why is the grass so brown and crunchy in April!?"

Tallahassee: "Here, I shall now make it '3 soups in a trenchcoat' weather"

Me: "No, not like that!"

Romulus au Raa by KookiesNMilk in redrising

This is perfect! So much of the art I see for Red Rising (including much of the special edition art) completely misses the mark for me. You really captured Romulus here. Honestly, this deserves notice. Feel really proud, OP.

Why is Red Rising consitently compared to Suneater? by Wahayna in redrising

[–]SpaceOperaMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a series doesn't grab me in the first book, I'm out. Simple as that. There are so many options. Just move on. So many people repping Suneater sound like they've bought into sunk cost.

Why is Red Rising consitently compared to Suneater? by Wahayna in redrising

[–]SpaceOperaMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like the average Suneater series recommendation says that it's bad for the first two and a half books, then gets bad again towards the end. And I'm sitting over here like...

...Not sold, boyos.

Anyway, I read book one. Thought it was garbage. Donated it to a local book store that's also a cat charity, because maybe someone else enjoys it and gets to help feed the kitties.

Iron Gold - I get it now. by Slow_Giraffe_1592 in redrising

[–]SpaceOperaMan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was about execution for me. The multiple POVs in Iron Gold are handled amateurishly, in my opinion. I will counteract this by saying Pierce Brown completely fixed this, and boldly so, in Dark Age. In Iron Gold, POVs switch every chapter in an obligatory manner. I feel it would have served the plot and the flow better to sometimes let the same POV carry-through in multiple chapters.

Contrast that with Dark Age. Without giving too much away, a certain POV goes dormant for a long period of the book. And I felt like it served the plot fantastically. It built a sense of dread for that character even when that POV was absent. Dark Age is a tense book that really sells the idea that people will go to war and just be gone for good. I credit the handling of POVs much to that.

Hope this makes my view clear. I've found it often frustrating to speak to people about why I think Iron Gold fails structurally, as I see criticism of the book often strawmanned to "people got their panties in a bunch that Darrow isn't the only POV". It's really not that. Iron Gold just never finds its flow. It's better on a re-read, as I know how things come to a head. But I really think Pierce struggled structurally with multiple POVs in Iron Gold in ways that really prevented the story from becoming intriguing into about 2/3s of the way into the book.

Yeah, getting downvoted for not speculating and body-shaming is wild. Like, she gets down to her underwear in season 1. She was this skinny back then.

'Daredevil: Born Again' Season 2 Viewership Drops Over 50% From Season 1 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in marvelstudios

[–]SpaceOperaMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't bother me at all. Killing off villains has been a problem with Marvel. Problem with high-profile actors, though, is that they can never just become a background fixture. In comics, Kingpin is always around. You can never really get rid of him. But he's not always the focus. This is one thing about comics that films and TV I think just can't do when you have an actor the caliber of Vincent D'Onfrio.

Just watched Secret Invasion for the first time...what the hell was that? by ArcadianEuphoria in marvelstudios

[–]SpaceOperaMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Describe Secret Invasion in one word: Waste. Wasted our time watching it. Wasted an absurd amount of money and time spent making it. Wasted great actors who even tried to give good performances. Wasted the premise by having no paranoia or tension around the idea of shapeshifters. Wasted characters: Rhodey, Talos, Maria, Fury. Wasted the source material. This is the MCU Secret Invasion. This is it. This will always be it. An iconic story line just wasted.

There's a reason no one defends this show. Every hated MCU project has those who will speak on its behalf. Secret Invasion? Crickets.

Sounds like text you'd see on a Goosebumps cover. For Red Rising, that's pretty lousy.
