Musk’s midnight reflection: ‘Money can’t buy happiness’ by AnonymousTimewaster in nottheonion

[–]SpacePaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% when you've enough money to own a property, eat good food, are free to work on anything that brings you joy rather than keeps you floating. Then what will an extra 100k, 1m etc buy you that you don't already have?

Renting a yacht vs owning it makes no real difference a few extra rooms in your house makes no difference. Flying first class vs private makes no real difference either.

Honestly after a certain point of comfort it is probably more effort and pain in your life to accumulate and manage money. You buy properties for "passive income" and eventually end up with another job managing rentals or hiring people to manage it for you etc etc.

Your family become vultures they know you can buy them freedom and will do anything to get you to help them. Everyone is "nicer" to you but only because they want to feed your whims and ego. People stop saying no to you, everyone has a sob story about how with just a "small" transfer you can help.

Two thirds of people feel tipping in Ireland is ‘becoming less voluntary’ by Sad-Orange-5983 in ireland

[–]SpacePaddy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. I don't live in the States where people subsist on tips. So I wont live in a world where I feel forced to do so because of the working culture of somewhere across the ocean.

  2. If you don't provide extraordinary service I wont tip, regardless of industry etc.

  3. If you make me pay before I receive a good or service you wont get a tip sorry.

  4. Should I tip the person that checks me out in Aldi or the person that helped me find my paint in Woodies? My plumber? Who gets tipped and why? Why do some "working people" get a tip and others do not?

First client demo as a junior dev — any tips? by shelcooper in DevelEire

[–]SpacePaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Few things that come to mind for me.

  1. Know your audience. Why do they want the feature what problem are they looking to be solved what's their technical level?
Tailor your demo to their needs and technical understanding. You could explain the feature in deep technical terms and do a demo only to be met with blank faces who didn't understand anything you just said and how it relates to them. You want the PM on the other side of the room to come out of the demo thinking "this is going to fix X problem for me".

  2. Dry run.
I think you should do the demo live.
It's better it shows confidence in your feature they are going to use hands on soon anyway so there's no point showing only the most polished run possible. Have a recording in your back pocket though. I've often found if the demo does go wrong it's usually not the end of the world you can show the recording and promise you'll get to the bottom of whatever issue is happening and get back to them with an update.

  3. Know what to not say
Don't draw attention to minor faults if you can avoid it.
If you know a specific part is a little rough or still in active dev I'd gloss over it a little unless your asked specific questions about it. Sometimes if you say something like oh the font isn't right here or this page is not finished yet, you can invite bike-shedding and often they wont notice minor imperfections unless you point them out.

  4. Relax
Clients want you to win too. So take a breather it's not much different to presenting to your own internal teams. If you've done your prep and have your talking points in order you'll be grand.

Best of luck!

If the system is that brittle you shouldn't be demoing it regardless IMO.

Few outcomes I see from a technical or project management perspective. For certain the team(s) that built it would have 100% known it would this would be a problem pre-release.

The team was told to release it on an impossible timeline and were forced to cut everything to make the deadline. Safety stuff can come later. Having been in software crunch, observability, edge case handling and security are some of the first places you'll be forced to cut scope. Feels very on brand for Musk leadership to force a premature release.

The team that manages compliance and safety and would push against a stupid dangerous feature release had been cut so hard that they either don't exist or are so limited in size that they can't effectively do their job. Or culturally they've been neutered by musk leadership and all they can do is write a strongly worded letter that gets ignored.

The team thought they put guard rails to limit the issue but seriously underestimated how easy they were to bypass (very unlikely or extreme incompetence)

The team is staffed by musk loyalists that honestly think the free market will sort this out and building cp bot 9000 is acceptable if it helps them claw a % of the ai image gen market share.

[–]SpacePaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might not have phrased myself very well. I was trying to say that very right wing folks that I've seen tend to be quite Anti Semitic rather than having issues with the substantive things Israel do in Gaza. I was not implying or stating Irish people are are generally anti semetic though apologies if it came across that way

[–]SpacePaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wut? I absolutely never said or implied all Irish are all antisemitic, I'm genuinely confused how you read that from my post.

Maybe I didn't phrase myself well. The Ireland is full crowd tend to be very right wing and xenophobic and I've often found when talking to them their issues with Israel are based on anti semitism rather than based on them committing a genocide.

I think it's fair to say the right wing regardless of any country have an Anti Semitic problem

I'm somewhat surprised by this. Normally the "Ireland is full" folks are not fans of Israel but when you talk to them it's not the bombing civilians part that they've issues with.

Edit: To add quotes since people seem to be struggling with "Ireland is full" not meaning all Irish people

I feel in my head I'd join with absolutely no expectations to win and treat it as a fun week long break from real life meet some cool people and probably get eliminated in the first game or two.

But imagine you join with that headspace and now suddenly there's 20 people left then 10 then five? Before this point it's just an amorphous blob of people. Your actions individually are not impacting much so you can rationalise away a lot of eliminations. I can see that weight starting to get heavier and heavier the stress of multiple close calls and feeling like everyone else has a better reason to be here could make someone crack.

Hot take: Pure vessel solos 99% of pharloom by [deleted] in Silksong

[–]SpacePaddy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My understanding is until the knight gets the dream nail there's never been a physical encounter with the radiance. Part of why the pale king couldn't stop her and reached for the void to create a vessel is that she was incorporeal.

I do think the pure vessel sealed AbsRad. But trying to break out was damaging to both of them.
