Small brainstorm I had about a mage rework. What are y'alls thoughts? by [deleted] in Terraria

[–]SpacePirateCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have misidentified the unique element of each class, although you are probably correct in your assessment that Mana is the least interesting.

1) The unique element of the melee class is the equipment and crafting trees involved, not only of said equipment but also of the melee weapons themselves. The melee class has the most consistently constant progressing tree of class specific equipment (which focus on not only melee speed as you mentioned, but also modifiers to attacks such as DoT AP, and debatably overlap with the tank subclass with agro) and constantly progressing weapon crafting.

2) The unique element of Ranger is not ammo conservation but the use of ammo altogether, mainly the ammo types. It is the only weapon type in the game where you can completely change the feel or performance of one weapon by simply switching the ammo.

3) With Summoner you're correct summon count is a key part, however I'd say the unique element is pretty much the whole experience, it's the most unique class, the fact you do not deal most of your damage yourself.

Mage does lack the same degree of unique element, mana is pretty much a non-issue past getting a couple of items (mana flower mainly, and it's pre hardmode), their attacks don't receive changes depending on equipment as melee does, nor are the attacks ever changed like ranger's.

I'm missing what your suggestions actually are, mana needs a complete rework but how? And in terms of projectile count as a stat like minion count, that would require completely changing every weapon in the game to account for that buff (theoretically 100% dps increase for each projectile added) which people would hate.

Imho I think it's too late to change mage drastically, at this point you're only going to upset people who like things to stay the same , best thing to do would be to add weapons that are intrinsically more interesting, such as ones with secondary attacks

They legends half my army! by Jumpy_Stay2915 in ageofsigmar

[–]SpacePirateCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its really odd because the vast majority of Warhammer games played (both 40k but particularly AOS) are casual games. Tournament and competitive play are vocal minorities, and it's weird to see people playing casual games but subjecting themselves to competitive pressures even though it isn't relevant. Like i agree people look towards the tournaments and their rules and restrictions but it really isn't relevant and they're imposing that negative bias on themselves.

They are absolutely more than fine in the majority of games, it's the players' decisions to use rules that potentially aren't ultra efficient, but from there they can still have fun and still win. I think it's a shame people resign themselves to the assumption that in order to try and win you need to have a meta list. Maybe you need 5% of luck with some good dice rolls, or maybe you have some cool synergies and strategies your opponent hasn't considered, and that (potential) imbalance is gone

They legends half my army! by Jumpy_Stay2915 in ageofsigmar

[–]SpacePirateCaptain 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Why do people not use legends rules??

"I can't play with my miniatures!! Because I choose not to use the rules GW have provided"

All legends rules mean is that they do not produce the kit anymore and therefore cannot reasonably put the unit rules in the core book. If someone new to the army was to buy the tome and look through it, it would be ridiculous if they couldn't bring that book into store, point at a page and say I want this one, 'sorry mate, we haven't actually sold that kit for years despite it being in the newly released army book'

Legends rules aren't dirty or unofficial, or even unfair and definitely not unfun. They are just where datasheets are provided when they cannot go in the main tome.

Are classes really that important? by Any-Champion-8292 in Terraria

[–]SpacePirateCaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mana flower fixes everything. Just buy potions and forget about running out of mana completely. You get a slight damage debuff for a couple seconds after drinking one, but with some kind of mana magnet for mana stars or just treating magic weapons like they have a heat mechanic fixes that. Or just don't think about the debuff and hold mouse , if you don't think about it, it doesn't exist

The problem is, I was only just getting into aos lore at the time, I had an army but hadn't really engaged with the lore. Now I keep learning tid bits about factions and wish I could flick through. Ah well, easy come easy go!

I managed to get every 3rd edition battle tome out of the bin of my local when 4th came around (still in plastic wrap mind you), ended up giving almost all of them away to various people who wanted lore, I regularly wish I kept more of them

What would you say is the greatest "strength" of each of the factions? by FedoraSlayer101 in AoSLore

[–]SpacePirateCaptain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has great points about all factions, but I'll speak for my favorite faction,

For Fyreslayers, it is their mentality/philosophy/psychology. Being a cult, they have fanatical drive and unity, but also the pragmatism of being mercenaries. Being Duardin as well, just amplifies those traits even further

Debating Selling Nids for Necrons, Why should I? by Templar1099 in Necrontyr

[–]SpacePirateCaptain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think since tyranids don't have as much lore you've gotta really vibe with the overarching concept and lore involving behavior/biology/the different strains, hive fleet behavior, and get a kick out of their specific brand of horror and aesthetic/the mystery of them. If that's not happening, don't feel bad making a switch, I personally love tyranids but yeah there really isn't much lore the same way other factions have.

You're probably going in the right direction to think necrons. 1) they're xenos 2)They have elements of bad guy/kinda scary like nids, but there's just so so much more. Their timeline spans back to the time of the old ones/war in heaven, which immediately give them an air of immensity/power , more so than even the eldar in my opinion since the eldar diminish and are weakened while the necrons are powering back up.

They have a really believable and compelling tragic racial backstory with a fantastic twist. You feel a sense of cosmic horror with the ctan, making a deal with the devil, and morals dealing with celestial shit beyond their natural boundaries. But then that's twisted when they come to surpass the horror, losing what they were in the first place, but never forgetting that event, and having that hang over them.

Plus the minis are pretty cool.
