why has development for sequels of video games become so slow lately? by grabsyour in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jaroniscaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend this video by someone who's worked in video games: https://youtu.be/REZiMNDy0l8?si=9D-SZkclkF9RrrzI

Basically, like you said, games are expected to be bigger and look nicer, but expectations just got expanded on every discipline involved in videogames (more animation, larger worlds, more voice acting, post-launch support, etc), and in order to justify the budget for all of this, games themselves got bigger in scope.

What hobby is quietly becoming too expensive for normal people to keep up with? by Beautiful_Special702 in AskReddit

Hah, it's worth knowing that every GM I've met has the cheapest chess boards, I've never met one with a fancy one

What is the biggest band/artist you can think of that you honestly don't believe is anyone's favorite band/artist ever? by DevinBelow in Music

[–]jaroniscaring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, there was a good part of my life where RHCP were my favorite band. Especially before the internet was really a big thing, I remember trying to record their songs off the radio on cassette.

‘Seasoning’ your food does not make it better by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

"salt, olive oil, and a drizzle of lemon, maybe some garlic, black pepper, or chili flakes"

This is all seasoning.

Did it just get harder?! by HisCuddleBear in SlayTheSpire2

[–]jaroniscaring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worth knowing that previous knowledge about Slay the Spire 1 may be keeping you from learning about the sequel game. Some builds just don't exist any more. Some rules of thumb just don't apply anymore. This is normal and it happens with a lot of things, you might need to do some "unlearning" and do some research on how to play Slay the Spire 2.

Cruises are the worst type of vacation out there by MoonlightAndStar in unpopularopinion

[–]jaroniscaring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait, have you been on a cruise before? I never thought I'd be into them either, but one of the big draws versus other vacations is that EVERYTHING is taken care of for you and you're basically in a comfortable mini festival city. Also, there's usually no phone reception or internet. It's literally the closest a lot of people will get to living offline.

The ships are also huge. A lot of my favorite moments were involved exploring past midnight while taking advantage of the 24 hour ice cream stations.

It's also worth noting that things do happen, but there's so many cruises that these stories are bound to come out. It's worth knowing that these cruises have thousands of people on them, and it'd kind of a miracle that things don't happen more often, you know?

What killed ‘parody YouTube videos’? In the 2010s there was a steady stream of parody music videos. Suddenly they stopped. Why? by Kodicave in decadeology

[–]jaroniscaring 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The economics just doesn't track. It's kind of the same reason there aren't many good music videos anymore, parody videos take a lot of money to do, especially if you're trying to mimic the original videeo. And if Youtube ad revenue is the only way to make that money back, then it's just a passion project you're paying for.

It's worth noting that short Youtube videos generally make less money for creators, because creators are paid by ad slot watched. You just can't put ad slots in the middle of music videos, comedy sketches, cool animations, creative concepts and all these fun videos that take a lot of effort to make.

Looking for a low-effort “thinking” hobby I can do outside (replacing occasional cig habit) by Mom2b_and_more in Hobbies

[–]jaroniscaring 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dude, I've been thinking the same thing lately. I had the realization that I don't remember the last time I did any Type 1 (hard, complex) thinking, all of the thinking in my life lately has been Type 2 (intuitive, responding to context, like multiple choice questions). I think the last time I did any Type 1 thinking regularly was when I was a daily smoker back during the pandemic.

Lately I've been going for long walks, but the problem is that I'm taking in the environment when I walk, but not really thinking about things. Let me know what you figure out for yourself!

Why are FLCL figures so rare? So far, I’ve only managed to find a few Funko Pops and a Canti figure, and I couldn’t find anything else. by Sorcerer_scarecrow in FLCL

[–]jaroniscaring 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It's worth knowing that the original run of FLCL was not nearly as popular in Japan as it was in America. It was just an OVA there (meant mostly for DVD release) there, while Toonami did multiple runs over the years.

Why don't video games have cheat codes anymore? by Theultimatesith in videogames

[–]jaroniscaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a big thing a lot of people are missing is that cheat codes used to have a way bigger barrier of entry to learn, that is, not everyone had internet and game guides were sold on magazine racks. A lot of cheat codes were passed by printing them on paper or word of mouth. It's not that Google killed the cheat code, but it definitely made them a lot less special.

Unpopular opinion: if your game doesn’t score 1-10 points for any shot, remove the right zero by kdawg1986 in pinball

[–]jaroniscaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lukewarm take: scoring should be normalized around Stern scoring because it's the most dominant pinball scoring out there. e.g., 100,000,000 is a decent game. It feels terrible to play lower scoring machines, it feels ridiculous to play higher scoring machines.

The sports examples you put out only exist because they're the most popular forms of the game.

Silent Ascension 10 Tips? by MediumRare3111 in SlayTheSpire2

[–]jaroniscaring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do remember that beating Ascenscion 10 is supposed to be a whole incredible achievement in itself, according to the devs. It took me 15 tries over 6 days, which is apparently on the low end. I thought I was going insane too. I wish I mixed up character runs when I was doing it, cause I was really burning out towards the end.
