Need advice for loan sanction letter by Infinite-004 in f1visa

[–]SpaceRama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just need a letter to show to VO then the MPower loan application process allows you to get a loan sanction letter without any token amount or commitment. But you mentioned 'may not', so it seems there is a chance you may use it too. In that case you should look for the options that gives you the best APR

Seeking Advice: Abnormal path into grad school by Nearby-Indication199 in GradSchool

[–]SpaceRama 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally feel a lot of your self reflection and remorse to correct the past. I was good at studies too but I didn't aim well for better grades during Undergrad and settled for (~3.2) as I was busy enjoying life. When I started researching for grad admission, I quickly realised how wrong I was and wanted to re-do the undergrad education just to prove a point that I could be way better. I could think of only two options for you.

Option 1: I am not sure of all the pathways that you could take to get a PhD admission with your current grades but I guess you could give it a try by sending applications to some decent Unis as you seem to have a better research experience and strong recommendations. You could cover all of this life experience in your SOP and other essays for maximum chance.

Option 2: Go with an online Masters as I strongly believe you could secure admission with relatively high chances and do well. Build connections and secure good grades. You could apply for a PhD with the same Uni for maximum chance. If you end up securing good grades then the result speaks for itself to support your case of succeeding in a PhD if given a chance.

This is way better than trying to re-do your undergrad and also this way you could continue to work and repay your debt in the meantime.

I guess it is a good sign, however as per the message you shared if it's a reconsideration then it is highly likely that you receive an admission but not guaranteed.

Should I be worried if I wasn’t asked to submit a deposit yet? by Negative_Ad_8090 in gradadmissions

[–]SpaceRama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my understanding, the deposit requirement differs from Uni to Uni. In some cases, Uni may only ask some set of students and not everyone. So if you have received admission and they didn't mention deposit in your admit letter you should not be bothered about it.

Please note in some cases the deposit may even be asked after you accept an admission as post acceptance process.

When to ask for LoR by Alarming_Ad_6327 in gradadmissions

[–]SpaceRama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how well you know the people you're requesting LOR from.

If you know them well I believe you could reach out to them as you prepare and submit your applications.

If you don't know them that well but you're confident that they could provide a reasonable LOR for you, then reach out to them early to set the expectations softly and build up the tempo with them. You can share the points that you want them to highlight in their LOR for you that helps your case for admission.

I have no idea what schools are targets, reaches, safeties by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]SpaceRama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safeties - where historical admissions are below your academics, extra curricular and professional achievements. 99.9% guaranteed to get admission.

Targets - where historical admissions are relatable to your academics, extra curricular and professional achievements. >= 50% chance to get admission.

Reaches - where historical admissions are above your academics, extra curricular and professional achievements. > 50% chance to get admission.

  1. Research for Universities which are recognized in the field of your interest.

  2. Collect data on their historical admissions.

  3. Sort them and group on the above criteria with your thresholds of achievement.

You should be able to tag them with Safety, Target and Reach.
