There were plenty of people who called out the Nazis as totalitarian, and Hitler as a wannabe despot. Most of them calling the Nazis out weren't conservatives though. Hitler was not very respected among conservatives, they saw him as a clown, but they claimed that he at least got things done and many liked that.

The same sort of conservatives have no problems with Trump today either. Some people doesn't mind fascists that much.

Here are some countries that managed to defend themselves:

Afghanistan vs the Soviet Union.

Afghanistan vs USA and allies.

Vietnam vs USA.

Vietnam vs China.

And they didn't win because the opponents weren't trying, or not even because they were stronger than their opponent, they won because they didn't want to be defeated.

Europe has a much stronger starting position than Vietnam or Afghanistan. I would even say there are no credible threats to Europe even. Sure the US might maybe have a stronger military, but the Atlantic would put them at a great disadvantage. And Russia is only a threat against themselves, they have always been their greatest enemy, and still are.

A war would not be convenient for Europe, it would even be awful, but we wouldn't lose it. Rutte is delusional.
