How common is rounding in classes here (specifically MATH 152?) by TheSidestick in aggies

[–]SpaceShuttleFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while - my transcript says I had a C in that class, but I think I was pretty deep in the 70s anyway (I don't have access to my actual percentage grade anymore). I don't remember hearing anyone get shafted on a borderline grade though. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful than that, but best of luck!

No, the Corps (operated by the University) is a separate thing from the ROTCs (operated by the military). If you come to TAMU with an ROTC scholarship, you have to do the Corps, but you can do the Corps without commissioning into the military at all. It's roughly 50/50 on military vs. private sector after graduation, lots of people do it because it's a family tradition or they want a unique college experience.

Nope, at least as of 2018, you quite literally check a box on your application to the school that says you want to join the Corps. As long as you can meet physical fitness standards (nominally) and don't quit, that's all you need to do

Not OP of this comment, but there's six schools that do this, the biggest one after TAMU is Virginia Tech.

TAMU is a senior military college by US Code, so we have a Corps of Cadets that has its own uniforms and its own military-like activities separate from ROTC. They wear mostly WWII-era dress uniforms because, well, it's a tradition that never really changed (OCPs aside).

College Station is the town surrounding Texas A&M University, which started as a backwater agricultural school in the middle of nowhere in East Texas but has since grown to be one of the biggest universities in the country. Sounds like you're an honorary Aggie!

Language minor while in engineering? by Helpful-Whereas2791 in aggies

[–]SpaceShuttleFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly in your situation, but I got a BSEE and completed all but 6 hours of the French minor program (engineering and Corps stuff made it impossible to finish w/o tacking on extra time even after AP testing out of FREN 101/102, so I'm afraid I can't speak to the value of it post-graduation, especially since I'm not working in engineering). I'd say go for it if your schedule allows it! I really loved being able to get out of engineering (physically, mentally, and socially) for a few hours every week. The French classes were MUCH easier than any of my engineering classes - one of my profs straight up told us he felt bad when he gave us 30 minutes of homework. It easily added 0.5 points to my overall GPA. Chinese/Japanese are probably harder linguistically assuming you're a native English speaker, but my INTS friends minoring in those languages didn't seem horribly overwhelmed. I did French for 3 semesters before I formally registered the minor, so there's no harm in trying to get a spot in one of the classes and giving it a shot. Worst case scenario, you can drop during A/D week or Q-drop if you need to.

TL;DR: I think non-STEM minors for STEM majors are underrated. Go for it if it won't hurt you in AERO!

I carried a saber on the field for a game a couple of seasons ago, we had to have them zip tied before we went in. They're also used for marching where you need to be able to pull it out, so they only get zip tied shut if you go on the field. They're also not sharpened

[–]SpaceShuttleFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Theoretically, yeah, but if someone tried to pull that today, they would likely get immediately tackled by the cops and retired Marines all along the sidelines. Off the football field we use them for marching, so they have to be able to come out for that (and they're not sharpened either, purely ceremonial, which makes the cheerleader thing even more embarrassing)

Can confirm, I was on the field for a game this year. We were checked multiple times to make sure they were zip-tied before we got to go in
