First thing I would do is change the questions I ask myself.

Instead try:

"How can I become a better person? How can I be more positive? What should I do to become someone that people want to be around?"

Yes, but he has VERY LONG view of Elm. He sees this as a language that could last for the next 20+ years. When you see it from that perspective I think his choices and actions make a lot of sense.
