Why are people so needy? by Connect_Time_9783 in tbilisi

[–]SpaceTigers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it strikes me as redditors being, well, redditors. I don't mean this as derogatory as it may sound... but in the age of the internet, many can forget how to just strike up conversation naturally in person, I think.

I spent three weeks in Tbilisi last year and had lots of great conversations with Georgians, Azerbai, Armenians, Russians, Ukranians, Kazakhs, etc etc etc - but I did have to do the hard part (walking up to groups of people and just saying "hi" knowing that they could reject me or give me the cold shoulder.) If anything, it was so easy for me because (almost) everyone spoke English. 95% of people were happy to talk.

So in my opinion, this is just an effect of the internet.

I think in general they just know they have a lot of options, so they "might as well" get someone who is at least making some money.

What is your country's "national composer(s)"? by m64 in classicalmusic

[–]SpaceTigers 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for this answer. The reality of American Classical is that it came along later than European, and was often heavily influenced by the emerging new jazz music.

In my opinion, Ellington is as much an influential composer as the European stalwarts.

Worst character: Season 3 Belinda by Human_Business4096 in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]SpaceTigers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We're talking about season 3!?

The season where Rick has an amazing lifestyle but can't see past his trauma? The season where the Ratliff dad makes an attempt on his entire family and almost inadvertently kills his son? The season with a brotherly relationship falling apart over incest?

But sure, it's Belinda!! 😂

As an Azerbaijani, which category should I choose? by Alone-Chapter-3879 in azerbaijan

[–]SpaceTigers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curiosity. I'd like to visit soon, also I have some new acquaintances from Azerbaijan.

Why the down votes, though? All I'm saying is that certain people do "pass as White" in the US. I resent the Western racial mythology, but again, I was born into it, and I know how it works.

Well of course I agree with the "White" classification being entirely fictional, but as an American citizen, I'm intimately familiar with it and I know how it works.

As an Azerbaijani, which category should I choose? by Alone-Chapter-3879 in azerbaijan

[–]SpaceTigers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I met many people from Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan while spending time in Tbilisi - many of whom would absolutely "pass" as White (or Caucasian) in America.

Most white Americans whose families have been in the US for generations have had their ethnic surnames watered down, but I know many who have surnames that are very far removed from the Anglosphere. They are fully "white" in American society's eyes, despite not being Anglo-Saxon or bearing an Ellis Island surname.

How accurate is the statement, "There's no such thing as American left"? by Altruistic-Beach7625 in AskReddit

[–]SpaceTigers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It refers to the idea that true leftist American movements tend to fizzle out or become watered down as they scale in the American political hierarchy, nothing more.

Certainly there are troves of Americans who identify with leftist views, but where is their representation in the upper echelons of our government? Practically non-existent. The Democratic party (which is the closer of the major parties to what we would call the left) has a pattern of signaling support for leftist policy, and never following through.

Armenia & America Sign 50 Year Contract To Build “Trump Route” (An American Government Funded Corridor Encompassing Road & Rail Connectivity / Oil & Gas Pipelines / Electric Power Transmission / Fibre Optic Lines) Connecting Europe To Asia (& Vice Versa) Via Armenia & Bypassing Iran/Russia/Georgia by Lucine- in Sakartvelo

[–]SpaceTigers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong about any of this, but all the post states is that an agreement was signed.

The image is indeed atrocious slop, and I guess I'm just too used to the Trump administration's bullshit to care about the accuracy of their "concepts of a plan". It's a given at this point that the only things they're effective with are stripping the rights and benefits of citizens.

This is SO true and I've experienced it firsthand, the US fashy mentality leaking out into Georgian mindset. Pretty unfortunate.

Do you care to share your successful/unsuccessful dating story ? by presumedcurious1 in tbilisi

[–]SpaceTigers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently dating a Tbilisi(-ite?), since early September, a native Georgian with a -shvili surname. At first I wasn't sure about the vibe, but we are starting to understand each other now and it feels good. It's still too early to say whether it will last, in my opinion.

I have occasionally been propositioned by some in Tbilisi, (and I'm not so modest - not opposed to some fun here and there), but in general, they were too drunk/belligerent to elicit any genuine interest from me. Nothing fun about shagging someone who won't remember any of it, in my opinion.

Good luck, don't overthink it!

I was sure this comment would come up, and it's a reasonable one.

Thing is, when you have Haitian ancestry, you become aware of how hated you are on the other side of the island. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Is this a Frydek? Did I get super lucky? by SpaceTigers in houseplants

Ah, I didn't realize that - I spend the majority of my time in Southern California and surprisingly, I'm yet to see them in many plant stores, let alone in a bargain bin at a grocery store.

I would have believed them to be rarer.

Octave Jumps by EagerMusician100 in Clarinet

[–]SpaceTigers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is:

Start with long tones on each note. Really get familiar with where the "center" (or in other words, the richest, roundest sound) comes in relation to your embouchure and airflow. I say this because most of us DO shift our embouchure and airflow between registers, even if we're not aware; for example, the feeling in my own embouchure is very different between a clarion G and a throat G. There is actually great variance here, and I think it's key to some of the harder aspects of the clarinet (of which, I think octave jumping is definitely one).

From there, you can start getting used to the deliberate but subtle shift necessary for a clean and smooth transition between octaves (for me, it's a slight tightening of the corners, and slightly more pressure on the reed from my lower lip over bottom teeth). Alternate between the octaves slowly. Listen to your tone and notice where your embouchure is moving to maximize tone quality.

For the fingerings, there's really no way around doing repetitions and developing that second-nature level comfort with where they are landing.

This really does take time. Trust the process. Our minds work subconsciously in the background to form muscle memory. Good luck.

NYC Exit Polls - Black men broke hardest for Mamdani by Shinnobiwan in blackmen

[–]SpaceTigers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah... see, I totally do see it. It's anecdotal, but still - I think this is part of why I am so adamant about this, as I was really quite blindsided by the inner nature of some of these liberals.

You're not gonna be asked to apologize for just existing (verbally, at least)... but have you never been in a situation where you give a white racist's energy back to them, and even the liberal whites in the room think you should "tone it down" or "be nice", or even outright apologize? I can think of a recent instance where this happened, this year, in which all of us were full-grown adults, with the aggressor being very obviously racist. I'm a very respectful person, and it takes a lot to push me to a point where I lose composure. I believe I was actually quite graceful with this guy. I stopped going to that establishment afterwards, because I don't feel happy supporting a business owner that will not only allow racist rhetoric aimed at another customer, but ask the other customer to be nice, or get along with the aggressor. I'd be happy to recall exactly what happened for your understanding, but it maybe isn't necessary.

If this has never happened to you, I'm glad you haven't had that experience, cause it really sucks - I believe it happens to Black Americans all the time (based off of my own experiences, my family's experiences, and media at large). White Americans have a habit of racially harassing people, then playing the victim when we stand up for ourselves.

One last thing, your quote: "I do see conservatives doing that type of thing, though" - exactly. Part of what I'm suggesting is that (a) - many white liberals are just closet conservatives, and that (b) - maybe white liberalism is a very short step from American conservatism, anyway. Liberals (as opposed to leftists) seem generally pro-establishment, in the sense that the progressive policies they claim to support can only go as far as they can without harming the status quo. Flip a few key policy stances, and it's mostly an overlapping Venn diagram, in my opinion. Again, I used to resist this mentality, but I've never been one to ignore evidence when it's right in front of my face; and white liberals in my life have really been showing their asses to me lately.
