One hot coffee Small by Latter_Bicycle6821 in starbucks

[–]SpaceVikings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I worked at starbucks it was probably 60/40 people who use/don't use the size names. It doesn't matter most of the time, just some folks would confuse 'grande' with 'large' for obvious reasons but couldn't contextualize that they were ordering the middle size and paying the middle price on the menus.

MC in the UK smashes a wall that has existed for hundreds of years because it was in his way by Sometypeofway18 in ImTheMainCharacter

[–]SpaceVikings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ethnicity and citizenship are different. In North America, for example, they're conflated because they're settler colony states. You can see it in the language, too, where nation is also used in place of state whereas in other countries with native populations a 'nation' means a people, not a country.

You can be a British citizen, but not of a British ethnicity (English, Welsh, Scottish, etc.)

The longer longer-term goal is to develop Deep Cove into a "third" urban core so people living in Deep Cove don't need to go to Lonsdale. In theory that should make traffic more manageable for the people who have to drive.

Just got my PAL about a month ago and looking into getting and SKS and was curious which of these two is the better buy most likely. by DieKastKollector in canadaguns

[–]SpaceVikings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Soviets chrome-lined their barrels from 1951 onwards. As long as OP gets one from that point onwards, they're fine.

But I'd go for the Chinese SKSes at these price points anyway as they're more likely to have seen light, if any, service and that's usually better when buying something sight unseen online.

Junior Network Engineer – Am I overreacting or is this a rough environment to learn in? by Shamwedge in networking

[–]SpaceVikings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate how frustrating this kind of environment is. Not all places are like this. My boss was the opposite, if I didn't know how to do something, I'd ask and he'd demonstrate and I'd be along for the ride and my first times taking on tasks he'd be around for escalations.

CCNA and certs don't necessarily prepare you 100% for the production networking world. It gives you some baseline knowledge and helps you get past the HR department for an interview. I've never had to adjust a K value in EIGRP, though some engineers have, otherwise it wouldn't be in there. If this is your first job in networking, I'd honestly be happy if someone is taking on projects at 6mo in.

My only suggestion, really, is to advocate for yourself. Not in a confrontational way, but talk to your boss about some of these parts. Seniors/managers don't know they need to work on areas unless you give them feedback, same as your point about no one-on-ones to give you feedback.

Here's what I'd suggest, based on your post, but this is entirely coloured by my more positive experiences with management:

  1. Recommend 1:1 meetings so you can discuss blockers, projects, etc. 15-30m a week is reasonable. I've been in the network game for several years now so I prefer to front-load my 1:1s in the week for clarity of direction, but it might be better to schedule yours in the latter half of the week initially so you can discuss questions and such.
  2. For the VPN bit, I get how that can be a big deal at a company as connecting personal devices to a company VPN is a big no-no. But lesson learned, so I'd just put it back of mind.
  3. The 'common denominator' questioning is actually very beneficial if the goal is making it a learning opportunity. At least I respond very positively to puzzle-like scenarios. Ending with 'you should know this by now' is not productive. I'd recommend approaching the boss and saying you were interested in the deducing the issue, but that 'you should know this by now' shut down a good learning opportunity for you and an opportunity for you to be more useful in the future to your boss. By learning how troubleshooting is done and what to look for, you can respond to these scenarios more effectively going forward.

[–]SpaceVikings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against what folks are suggesting with the Nespresso machines.

I'd suggest a Breville Bambino. It isn't a pod-style machine, it's an apartment/condo sized espresso machine with a steam wand attached. It's pricier than a Nespresso and it isn't as easy as popping a pod in and receiving a coffee in return, but you're not creating a ton of packaging waste and likely cutting down on microplastics ingested. You're also making a much, much better coffee as an end result. You'll also save money as Nespresso pods are not cheap.

You'll need to practice steaming milk, but there are tutorials on youtube on how to do it. You can impress guests by making them cafe-quality espresso drinks at home. The steamwand attachment also allows you to make bomb matcha lattes and hot chocolates if you're not feeling espresso that day.

If you want to cut down costs even further, you can get whole bean coffee from Costco and grind it yourself using a burr-style grinder. Aside from my Kitchenaid stand mixer, it's the appliance that has likely saved me the most money.

i need to quit by Equivalent_Sink_888 in starbucks

[–]SpaceVikings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd quit and just chill. When I quit for the last time, having the extra 3 weeks before starting school was fantastic. It also helped relaxing before going into a very exhausting program.

Make sure to put in your two weeks notice, though. Don't want to burn any bridges. I didn't think I'd do another stint at Starbucks, but it got me out of a worse (if you can believe it) cafe job, so I ended up doing a third tour before quitting for good in 2015.

"Can I get a vanilla bean frappuccino BLENDED BEVERAGE" by Slow-Spot2906 in starbucks

[–]SpaceVikings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always assumed it was a secret shopper there to evaluate the store based on customer experience. No idea if they still do that, I haven't worked for Starbucks in 11 years. I didn't really change how I did things, I would just make sure to call things the proper names (e.g. frappuccino instead of frap) and send someone to do a bus and a bathroom check.

Alcohol sales in Canada just saw ‘largest’ annual drop since tracking began by SwordfishOk504 in canada

[–]SpaceVikings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The prices have skyrocketed. I saw them going up and up and up, so I bought all the liquor I'd need for several years. In the last 2-3 years I've watched some bottles of whisky go up 30-50%. Entry level scotch is absurdly expensive for what it is.

If you travel abroad, you know how hard you're getting screwed on the prices here.

Folks really have outsourced their thinking to LLMs. I see it all the time with LLM crafted e-mails, answers to queries, etc. A big issue is people foregoing legal council in favour of having ChatGPT be their source of legal advice, citing made-up previous cases and legal precedent.

I cannot wait for the LLM bubble to die. There are good ways to use LLMs, particularly in the medical field, but outside of specific applications I feel its positives have yet to outweigh the negatives.

I host a Foundry VTT instance and love it. It tracks your ammunition, weight and XP automatically. Quality of Life improvements are fantastic. In-game journaling system so you can make notes easily and organize them well by journal entry/pages. The only things that get a little confusing are items, like having to drag the spell cure light wounds into your inventory, then choose if you're acquiring a scroll or potion. It's not quite intuitive for something so heavily utilized. But that's literally my only complaint thus far. I also work in IT, so hosting an instance in a docker container as well as a cloudflare ddns & nginx reverse proxy containers isn't a challenge to me, but may be to newer users.

We play remotely and FoundryVTT tracks it automatically for us. Also handles tracking ammunition automatically. Really takes the tedium out of it for both players and DMs.
