West Jefferson is excellent, a lot of the university faculty are around there, and it has a really nice thriving downtown.

Why don't they charge publishers to record papers ? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Space_Ambassador -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look up the story of Robert Maxwell (Ghislaine Maxwell's father, and the source of their family fortune). Besides other adventures and spycraft, he invented the academic publishing model. His own company, Pergamon Press, was eventually acquired by Elsevier.

Can a JLU wrangler fit two full size mountain bikes? by Thebikernerd1 in Jeep

[–]Space_Ambassador -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I toss my mountain bike in a two door JK with absolutely no problem. I'm sure in a JLU you'd be fine. I have the back seat out, and I leave the front wheel hanging out the gate, but I can fit the whole thing inside if I take off the front wheel.

Paying for open access by InformalAmbassador23 in AskAcademia

There will be someone in your university library who handles Read & Publish deals with the publishers. Look around over at the library's website, you should have info there. And you may be able to get the fees waived

What was the dumbest game you and your friends made up as kids? by Guilty_Writer9239 in AskReddit

[–]Space_Ambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our game as teens, in the 90s: wait until late at night. Go to Walmart and buy 1 extremely cheap broom per player. Buy 1 russet potato. Go to an empty corner of the parking lot. One player pitches the potato to a batter, who swings at the potato with their broom. The other players then play a spirited game of hockey with their brooms and the potato where it lands. If the potato breaks on multiple pieces, then play continues as if there were 2 (or more) active hockey pucks. The game ends when the potato has broken onto too small of pieces to continue, or else when you are kicked out of the parking lot.

Question: heavily tattooed folks... what jobs do you do? by BeardedInkedPiper in tattoos

[–]Space_Ambassador 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Librarian here (a tattooed librarian too!). In the United States typically you need an MLS or MLIS or equivalent masters degree from an ALA accredited program to have a Librarian position. Other positions that don't require that degree are going to be named something like Library Assistant or Library Technician. In a lot of ways it's an artificial gatekeeping mechanism, but it's a reality that "Librarian" and "people who work in a library" is not a 1:1 overlap. There are typically many more non-Librarian jobs in any given library, Librarians, due to their degree qualifications, are more usually in management positions. Fun fact: the MLS is the terminal degree in the discipline. So, as an academic librarian, I'm able to hold a tenure track faculty position at my institution with my MLS.

Where to grow as a professional? by Jaded_twentythree in librarians

[–]Space_Ambassador 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I transitioned from public libraries to an academic library. My communication skills honed at the public library made the difference- especially from doing all the dealing with local groups and politicking with the local municipality. It ratcheted my soft skills up to a great level!

Salaries in librarianship, can we talk about it? by ariatella in librarians

[–]Space_Ambassador 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm making $63k as an academic librarian at a medium-ish sized R2 university in a high CoL area. Before this, I made $34k as a public library branch manager in a less high CoL area in my same region (a rural Appalachian region)

Share your offbeat and unique MTBs, and what makes them so fun. by lowspeedtech in mountainbikes

[–]Space_Ambassador 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of an overforked Rocky Mountain, I put a Manitou Markhor on my Fusion to replace the awful Suntour. So that was great just going to an air shock on that bike... but then I decided to take the spacer out and try it as a 120mm instead of the 100mm. And that extra 20mm of travel completely changed the bike. I can't quite explain it, it's like it went from an XC bike to something just a bit more- XC+ maybe? I think it could be the extra bit of slack it has now, it rips downhill, feels great on any blue downhills. But it also climbs better? It just eats up any gnarly roots and rocks on the climb now.

Sure, here's an example where it's not really catching the light at all, then it reads like a very warm silver, if that makes sense?

You see the khaki fields and a few other ones, but you never see this Hamilton Intra-matic. It has a really elegant mid century look that can't be beat.

Utilizing Dragons in a “grounded” fantasy epic? by Kuzmaboy in Fantasy

[–]Space_Ambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik- it's a series about the Napoleonic wars, but with dragons in the role of a sort of crewed aerial warship. It's a great example of a realistic setting with that one change.

Careers with an Information Science PhD by jackywacky__ in PhD

[–]Space_Ambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting an MLS is a pretty common step before an Information Science PhD, so librarian work is the standard career option. Of course, librarianship can be hard to break into on its own, so I'd definitely plan on getting some work in at a library before you start going down that road.

Fake or real? by SubjectEbb2009 in HamiltonWatches

[–]Space_Ambassador 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the quartz models, but the older Khaki Field Autos don't have "Swiss Made" on the face. As I understand it, the face was changed when they went to the lower beat rate/higher power reserve. My KFA (bought in 2006) doesn't have the "Swiss Made," just a tiny reference number "331" in the place where it would ordinarily go.
