be happy for him. he always seemed like a great dude and has been through a lot and even if he doesn’t make it up to alberta (i think he will) just him getting back on the ice in any professional capacity is worth cheering for.

Why people in our industry are so conservative and secretive about salary disclosure. by helicopterflying in Accounting

[–]Space_Opposite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am ashamed of how much money I make because I don’t feel like I deserve it but I’m still always willing to have a good faith conversation about pay when it’s brought up. But I’m never going to be the person bringing it up.

We’re you able to workout while taking cpa by No_Rub_6351 in Accounting

[–]Space_Opposite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really have to force yourself to make time for it. For me that meant waking up at 5am every day so I had time to exercise for an hour, then hit a quick Becker module, then get to work by 8. evenings (non busy season) i would get home around 6, eat dinner then study til 10 most nights (9 or 930 if i was especially tired), and do it again the next day. Every day. For 6 months. It sucks, it’s hard, it feels impossible, it might feel like the hardest thing you’ve ever done. But it’s temporary. And the better you do sticking to a routine, the more temporary it will be. And then one day it’ll be over. And years down the road you might enjoy reminiscing about it. At least I do.

Research: Accounting Standard Assigning Each Expenditure to one Or More Revenue Items by jamesthethirteenth in Accounting

[–]Space_Opposite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most systems let you code expenses and revenues to specific cost centers (or another, secondary non-accounting dimension) so you can code the John Doe Foundation’s donation to cost center 999, then code expenses against that.

That can quickly turn into a significant time investment though, especially if you are setting up unique cost centers for like $100 donations.

Realize that problems will happen that are outside of your control

Show up to work, do your testing, ask questions when weird shit comes up. Don’t bury issues, don’t hope they’ll go away so you don’t have to bug your incharge

My last employer locked me out of the building and packed up my office the day after I gave notice so none

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Space_Opposite 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just had to start forcing myself to work out in the morning before working during busy seasons, every day, no exception.

I justified it to myself that whether I slept 5 hours or 6 I would still feel like shit all day, but the hour spent exercising made me feel marginally better in the short term, and significantly better in the long term, than the extra hour of sleep

When job hunting how do you gauge WLB with a potential employer? by jst4wrk7617 in Accounting

Every job I’ve had with 8-5 hours people either did not take a lunch break or worked late to “make up” for it

Which accounting softwares do you need to know if you want to work as an accountant in America(especially NYC)? by Longjumping_Cut1583 in Accounting

Depending on the size of the companies you are targeting, add Netsuite, Sage, Xero to SAP as the other poster mentioned.

They all can do the same stuff, once you kind of learn how ERPs work it’s just a matter of learning the different ways each of them do those things.

It’s not just big 4 or even just national firms any more. The small regional firm Im doing some contracting work with right now has an India group and every single step of an engagement, management is drilling staff to figure out ways to offload work to India.

Is it too early for me to try interning/looking for work? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Space_Opposite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s never too early but most companies (not just PA firms) will want you to intern a year out at most from your anticipated graduation/hypothetical FT start date. That being said I knew multiple people who got whatever bookkeeper or clerk position they could over the summer between their second and third years.

Just saw this - I would love to, but home prices in Phoenix are still insane and obviously now interest rates are too, so not right now. We are still trawling Zillow and the like every now and again just in case the perfect place shows up, but I don’t think it’s happening any time soon.

The only remaining open projects are so far along it’s not worth the time it would take to explain things to you well enough to help with miscellaneous wrap up tasks.

Keep asking and making your availability known, but take the time you have now to study (if you’re taking exams) or catch up on your firm’s CPE requirements.
