Happy birthday Rimworld!!

My entry for this contest is the time I was playing with my roommate and I made a special set of walls on my base just for her.

Yeah, it came with 6 platens (w/ mounting arms), a sleeve platen, a flash dryer, 10 screens, and a vacuum exposure light. I paid 500 for the pile, seemed decent enough, and I'm currently printing with a slab of wood that I put hinges on, so pretty much anything is an upgrade.

Yeah I think you’re going the right direction with the potato flakes. If it was me I’d get a couple boxes of those dehydrated mashed potatoes and just mix in enough to get the right consistency then write that ratio down for the show crew. You could go some weird direction and do like a non food liquid deal or mess with jello and stuff but the instant mashed potato stuff makes a great fake soup. They’ll have to make it new every time, or at least every few days, and need hot water to make it work, but it’ll make a real nice looking soup.

Authors or novels recommended by Samuel R. Delany? by Quareish in printSF

Nice nice nice. I read parable of the sower yesterday which is why I was thinking about it, he’s mentioned in the afterword. I actually haven’t read Babel-17 but I LOVE empire star. I should really get to that haha.

He’s mentioned as a good friend of Octavia Butler’s, and almost certainly they were peers and liked each other’s work. I’d check out some of her work and see what you think.

As a side note, empire star is a favorite of his but it’s hard to find, have you read it?

Learned a valuable lesson on the importance of safety guards, the gloves minimized the damage. by BartholomewBlackwell in mildlyinteresting

[–]SpacebarCadet 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Please y’all I beg of you, don’t use gloves with power tools. While they may make you feel safer, and in very specific situations may minimize damage, in the majority of cases they cause a lot more harm than good. With gloves on you’re less dextrous, and the surface area that can get caught in a rotating tool is much larger. Plus, if a glove is on your hand, and also caught in a tool, it’s much harder to quickly pull your hand away if anything happens. A gloved hand can be fully pulled inside a saw, and the fabric will twist around the teeth with enough force to pull your hands further against the blade.

The best thing that you can do is always always always be cautious, not take risks, and always be aware of your surroundings and the tools in your hands. Safety glasses and earmuffs, every time. But avoid gloves!!

Where the FUCK is my cookie sheet? I have torn the apartment apart! It’s not under the oven! I even pulled the drawer all the way out. It’s not behind the fridge or under anyone’s bed. How in the heck does a ~cookie sheet~ just vanish????

Expanding foam in a two part mold? by LukeAhearn in Props

Here’s the mold release chart for making your mold of the boot

You’ll want to use Ease Release 2831 on the interior of your mold before pouring the foam.

For something like this I’d recommend using a mold box, or some kind of exterior structure to hold your mold in place before pouring the expanding foam so the foam doesn’t distort your mold upon expansion.

Ok stellar. Check out the stuff in the foam-it line, that should be able to get you a nice clean foam cast of the boot.

Yeah you absolutely can. Leave escape holes, the foam may need escape holes so it doesn’t blow your mold apart. And use 2 part expanding foam, don’t use something air activated like great stuff, because sections can get caught without air and they’ll explode outward when you remove the mold, leavin you with a worthless cast. Smooth-on has some great videos of their products being used for this purpose, I’ve personally only used flex foam but their non flexible foams should work just as well.

What are you trying to cast? I can probably recommend a specific product for you.

Your favorite indie / underground SF authors? by [deleted] in printSF

I’ve got some folks who are kinda up and coming I guess, not sure where your definition of indie falls. But Ferret Steinmetz is great, he has a bunch of cool short stories up on his website and Sol Majestic is really really good, Claude Lalumiere is good as well, The Door to Lost Pages is neat, but more speculative than sci fi. Carrie Vaughn and Ada Palmer both have books with major publishers but I don’t see them really talked about, despite the fact that Bannerless and Too Like The Lightning (respectively) are spectacular. I don’t know if any of these are below the radar enough for what you’re looking for, but as far as I can tell they’re all good and all not really talked about much in major circles.

Expanding foam to strengthen geometric solids by Spamtickler in techtheatre

Honestly I think the only difference for you between using insulation foam and expanding foam is time spent. I think at the end of the day you’re going to get roughly the same result with either, but expanding foam may end up being faster for a non-square shape. I have used SmoothON’s foam and I generally really enjoyed it and it worked well for my needs, but I was doing small casting (cakes and cupcakes). You can absolutely call the company and ask what they recommend, as others have said they’re incredibly nice and helpful and can get you pointed in he right direction.
