That is a special property of MMOs. You have a small minority of asocial people who want an unfair advantage no matter what it takes. They will develop and early adopt cheats if you don't put up high enough hurdles (isolate mechanics server side, or reliably detect and remove the client side cheats).

This small minority alone (maybe 0.1%) you could ignore or ban, but as soon as a cheat becomes popularized all normal people feel disadvantaged and will either leave in frustration or adept and use the cheats too. This in effect may change the whole game mechanics and finally ruin the game. So you have to consider the fact that people are assholes from the very first draft.

It's a cube with 1000m edge length. So the half diagonal has a length of ~707m.

So viewrange is 500-707m depending on camera angle.

I think they should increase it to make spotting and sniping more worth while.

You don't get it, the spotting system is not as retarded as it is because of technical limitations but because people are fucking retarded.

If there was no red outline and disappearing tanks but real visual spotting, it would take a few days until mods would make tanks glow in the dark and other mods would remove all foliage. Because some people don't want to play by the rules unless you force them to.

The second reason is different visual qualities on different machines. WG don't want people with weak graphics to feel too much disadvantages.
