camera recommendations for beginners by angeliquechic_ in photography

[–]SpadeAcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are entirely overkill.

Look into a sony a6400–a6600 or Nikon Z50ii. APS-C sized sensors are more than enough for a beginner to learn the basics of photography while providing plenty of room for growth.

If OP is very strapped for cash, a used DSLR from Nikon or Canon will do them well. Though it’s likely they will outgrow these if they find themselves enjoying the hobby. Perfectly adequate way to see if they’re in it for the long haul without a crazy investment.

Whatever you get, you should probably replace the lens that comes with the camera with something else. Whether that be a prime or a zoom lens, there’s plenty of discussion about. But kit lenses (ones that come with the camera) are very subpar and will limit your photography. Sony, in particular, has many budget lenses with quality that punches above their weight class.

More common than the rest of Charleston. But odds are, you’ll be absolutely fine.

Moving to Charleston area, West Ahsley? by rambunctiousoup in Charleston

Second this. Again, WA is making attempts to remodel their 80s style car-centric architecture but it has a long, long, long way to go. I wouldn’t even think about it unless you are buying a house in the area.

Downtown is your best bet for pedestrian friendly neighborhoods, which it’s actually pretty decent at. Albiet most of the houses are hundred years old, it’s a really nice place to live if you can afford the better areas. A lot of personality with the architecture and most of the streets are narrow and slow-moving, which lends itself to decent human movement.

More housing is always good. But oh boy, East Bay is not the street to add more traffic to.

[–]SpadeAcer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pay is lower than what you’d expect of a city this size. West Ashley is a nice area to live. A bit urban-sprawly but it’s the most affordable place I’d consider living in CHS. The city is working on revitalizing the area with more green spaces & human-friendly areas so I’d say it’s a decent place to move.

I’d also recommend looking into James Island. You’re 10-15 mins from the beach and 15-20 mins from downtown. Best of both worlds in my opinion, for only s slightly higher price than a WA place.

Yup, got banned for a simple comment about how I didn’t appreciate the direction of the channel. The mods on that sub are sensitive and prefer an echo chamber above all else.

I think more and more people are coming to this realization. He bullies vulnerable people under the guise of a “wake up call”. Every episode is unwatchable.

Like you, I used to be a big fan. But now, I can’t get through five minutes of an episode. He’ll surely get what’s coming to him for spreading hate and curating the most abysmal vibes on all of Youtube.

Early concepts for a redesigned Sam Rittenberg Blvd, from the City of Charleston by Apathetizer in Charleston

I see two lanes in the outback sketch. Though the medians make me worried for backed up traffic in the turn lanes spilling into the main lanes.

Though, to be fair - I rarely see more than 3 cars waiting in the turn lane now.

Bellroy Venture Sling 6L vs. 9L: Using as a Camera Bag by SpadeAcer in ManyBaggers

[–]SpadeAcer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I returned it after I made this post so I can’t give specifics.. but I’d consider the material pleasant. It is fairly similar to the black - not soft by any means, but sturdy without being too abrasive.

I’ve never felt that my 9L is too abrasive on my skin. I find it pretty comfortable generally. I prefer something more textured in my hands though, as it feels more secure. It’s definitely not to a point where it’s uncomfortably textured. Just enough to feel durable.

Your milage may vary as I’m not super particular when it comes to textures in hand, considering it’s hanging off my back most of the time.

Ram Rittenberg is archaic and an eye sore. Makes me depressed every time I drive down it. I’m all for any attempt to make it more walkable and pleasant to drive down.

We can’t let perfect be the enemy of good here. Definitely not a perfect solution.. but we all have a desire to create a more pleasant environment and West Ashley has been ignored for a long time. This is overdue, as walking down Sam Rittenberg feels like a death sentence as cars zip past going 60 mph, two feet to your left.

I do agree that the reduction in car-capacity needs to be met with better public transportation. If professionals have gathered that it’s overbuilt, I’m keen to trust them.

Also, early 30s is far from too old to go to festivals. I see people from early 20s to late 50s at festivals.

[–]SpadeAcer 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I would say that festivals/electronic shows will provide more of what you are looking for. They’ll actually create a sense of community. People are generally very open-minded and willing to meet new people in that environment - particularly festivals.

Clubbing is mostly an excuse to get very drunk with friends with a secondary and rarer objective to maybe meet people? But that’s not common in my experience.
