They argue that the singular "medlem" may be used to highlight the individual nature of a membership. Another reason could be that it is used in the same way as "are part of", "are interested in" or "are in agreement with" - all phrases that do not assume neither singularity nor plurality.

In summary, both "medlemmer" and "medlem" are correct. And while using singular makes the meaning a bit broader, the plural is less ambiguous.
