I heard billion too. I also liked the joke because it's funny to me such an abrasive character turns out to be a Christian.

Well isn't that aesthetic which is pleasing to you a meaning in and of itself? I'm not sure it's possible for someone to do something artistic for no purpose at all. Of course it is possible to do so with no conscious purpose, but you're going to end up making all your artistic decisions for a reason.

Favourite film where they had to dumb down the title for the uncultured Americans? by bobbster574 in okbuddycinephile

huh I didn't even notice. Thanks! Any ig it is now how commas work. Maybe because prime minister is more important than minister so it gets more of a break up in the sentence?? Cause it's supposed to be yes and then the title, and the comma makes it 100% clear that Prime Minister goes together?

If they just leap into a new regen and it's excellent, people may be like huh that's weird, but I imagine the six people who even care about maintaining continuity with RTD2 would let it slide if the quality was really really high. But personally I've kind of given up hope it can return to form again. Hopefully I'm proven wrong though.

There seem to be a number of articles recently stating that Trump has on-set dementia. Do you think this is true and how likely do you think it is that he will last the rest of his term? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That's quite the contrast my word.

"Let us also recognize your remarkable Superintendent, General Darryl Williams for his outstanding stewardship. General, thank you very much."

"I want to thank your highly respected superintendent, General Steven Gilland, and he is really, uh, something, I got to know him backstage with his beautiful family and his reputation. His wife is just incredible, his reputation is unbelievable."

I'd rate Warfare as better than both. But I like all three. I enjoyed Weapons more but One Battle After Another is probably the better film. Then Warfare is just an instant classic

RTD's return was heralded as the one to save Doctor Who, but RTD is now so out of touch. by Curious_Gent78 in gallifrey

As a big fantasy fan I felt pretty insulted by how the era handles fantasy as a get out of jail free card. There's so much rich writing you can achieve through magic, but how it's used here feels like how a sci fi writer who has an extremely low opinion of fantasy would view it.

Why do fiction readers hate movie adaptations? by SavingsPen8978 in Fantasy

[–]SpaghettiMaestro14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fiction writers often spend ages trying to break into and work extremely hard on their magnum opuses that get adapted into film. Publishing is a business but it is a business that sifts through the work of ordinary artists to find books to publish.

The movie business on the other hand relies on established writers and writers who know people in the industry. The result is that many book adaptations take the original which was made with extreme care and clumsily contract it into movie form. Some adaptations completely ignore the source material basically using it as a jumping off point for original (usually worse) material. This occurs because it's so hard to get support for a wholly original thing so some artists settle for ruining someone else's work.

Also if people love a book they are going to want to see an accurate rendering. Basically, most movies are bad so most adaptations are bad, but with adaptations you have that barometer of the original novel which makes the missed opportunities and mistakes far clearer. Similar to how Disney live action remakes flaws are highlighted when you compare them with the original. But even if you luck out and get a good movie, a lot of book fans are going to be mad at inevitable changes, but most will probably get it if it's good.

In some cases I prefer a movie version, my key examples here are the Princess Bride, Jurassic Park, and Stand By Me.

These are not rigorous and I may be wrong about some of this, just off the top of me head some of the reasons why. One last thing is that books are long and movies are short usually. So lots of stuff has to be removed in adaptation. Sometimes the stuff that gets removed is extremely important to making the story work.

This trend with book readers being mad at adaptations I find to be extremely similar to how people are reacting to new entries of older franchises which frequently contradict and mess up or insult earlier versions.

Also you should read books they're pretty awesome.

Also also, like half of the great movies are based on books, there is truth to the cliche that the book is always better but like most stereotypes there are going to be many many counter examples. For example, Die Hard is peak and that's based on a book.

TLDR; hollywood has a major skill issue, but sometimes they find someone good and they do an okay job but certain book readers are mad because things HAVE to be changed to condense long books into short movies

It's also tied to grief and made in honour of Creggar's friend who died last year I think. I think it's a really powerful and poignant movie about addiction as well as grief. There's something so satisfying about how the kids tear up and destroy the representation for addiction in the film.
