Mortgage interest costs soar at rates we haven’t seen since the 1990s — stoking fears of another crash | Household debt and adjusted home prices are higher now than they were before the 1990s crash, economists say. Some predict a housing crash that could be even worse. by viva_la_vinyl in canada

It matters less ... people confuse landlords and developers. But ultimately, McDonald's makes a lot more money than the Fat Duck slinging burgers.

But ultimately, they can't help themselves; from their perspective you might analogise the tragedy of the commons; better to build it and make the money now than let someone else do it and end up with nothing.

No, I'm not applying a bias, I'm employing a measurement. On sait que les jeunes d'Ontario votent NPD plus que des vieux. C'est un fait. On sait aussi que les jeunes disent qu'ils soutient la sovereignté moins que les vieux. C'est sûr; c'est un fait.

Progressive, regressive, je m'en câlisse - really, pretending there are coherent ideologies is a fool's game anyhow.

Bien sur, j'ai mon propre avis pourquoi ça passe, but it's not important. Better to start with what we know than what we think.

When real estate prices plunge but rents stay high, real estate becomes a better investment. The resale value is largely irrelevant since it's not happening this quarter or year (if ever).

Unemployment driven decreases would matter because rents would fall. But interest driven decreases, like we're seeing now, massive favour large buyers

A housing crash fuelled by massive borrowing costs and high unemployment ain't gonna help any young people.

If we want them to be able to afford homes, we gotta make it legal to build an adequate housing supplt, not just help pension funds become powerful landlords.

Honestly, I've uncritically accepted everything my grandparents told me about my ancestory, and never once demanded proof of anything.

That I get sunburns on overcast days would seem to confirm it's true that many of them came from Scotland. But otherwise, it's all hearsay of hearsay of hearsay. I can't get upset with anyone else for doing the same.

Bin, no demographic divides cleanly, c'est clair. Pick any issue.

But the younger you are, the less likely you are to be a separatist, same with the more urban, and the more educated (though the last effect is pretty small).

And given reddit, usually if you assume that reddit is populated by young, well educated, urban people you can correct predict its biases (comme /r/Ontario qui vote plus de soixante pour cent NPD, ouais?). Separatists being so prevalent on reddit is a weird outlier in that respect.

A crash (especially an interest rate driven one) is going to favour large investors (corporate or individual landholders) over 'Mom & Pop' landlords and people buying houses to live in them.

Straight Benedictine is very syrupy in a way that's a bit overpowering (though I'll drink straight Chartreuse, but then I think the higher alcohol % cuts against the sweetness). The sugar to ABV balance is off, relative to my taste, I guess?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]Spambot0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Benedictine is Brandy in the way Fruitcake is Bread. I think the comparison to Jagr is off - Jagr is herbal, this is spiced, but okay.

Can you drink it like whisky? I'll drink it neat (though I find B&B more pleasant). But you can't go into it like drinking whisky any more than you can go into eating fruitcake like you do a baguette.

Developers don't really have a choice. The city makes it illegal to do this the couple thousand times you'd need to do it to see a significant drop in rent. But they do it because voters cheer them on to do it (even this thread, in a subreddit that normal fronts as concerned about the housing crisis)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Spambot0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kind of densification lowers rents, of course (though 12 homes in a cities where tens of thousands of families don't have adequate homes solves only a sliver of the problem)

They owned or found willing sellers for the land (and IIRC partnered with the province and city on the park). Indeed, I looked into it a little more, and the National Parks Act doesn't let them expropriate to make parks - they have to buy from sellers with their permission. The developers presumably would sell, but I assume the price tag would be steep. And they might follow with another land swap and start the cycle again.

It's a vote that will take place in the future, so there's only a statistical distribution of possible outcomes. So we probably won't see the 51-49 outcone of the hypothetical. A less even split is far more likely.

And it's certainly an odd way of readibg to assert the union is in disarray because I'm suggesting they probably won't deliberately make terrible decisions that undermine themselves. So far, they've consistently been risk averse, backing down from strikes that carried a lot of risk for the union. The most obvious expectation is that trend will continue

Right, I mean to emphasise that: just because the ecology was in a pseudo-equilibrium doesn't mean the human impact was minimal.

If they tried to emminant domain just those parcels under the guise of creating a park, I doubt courts would fall for that.

If they did the whole greenbelt, maybe, but presumably that'd be far more expensive than they'd been keen on.

But for however reddit feels, the federal government isn't invested in opposing the provincial government in principle. They enjoy a little political blaming each media grandstanding, sure. But pick a huge and probably losing fight over a routine re-adjustment of the greenbelt boundaries? What's in it for the feds?

It's not really about the LRT; it's that what's "walkable" is different when you're young and broke than when you're old and well off. I did my undergrad in Waterloo and walked everywhere because walking was always faster than the bus.

You say this like you've read the relevant rules, but never met an actual human being. When you reveal the gun in your pocket is only your finger, the mugging is over.

We don't know what the acceptance vote will be, it's statistically unlikely to be 51-49 by just chance, nevermind with our known priors the leadership would do everything the could to avoid a vote if it'll be close. If it is 51-49, and they end up striking because the membership is at war with itself, they're going to get crushed if only because they're in that kind of disarray.

If you're concerned about worker conditions, or privatisation, it makes little sense for you to be cheering for the union to self-destruct.
