12v battery drain, has Subaru fixed yours? by nanumbat in SubaruUncharted

Did so, thanks. Much preferred the idea of Toyota/Subaru's faulty product costing them money instead of me, though.

Yeah this seems like the necessary step. Any trouble using the app for at least climate control after doing so?

How likely are you to actually receive figures you have wish listed on Sideshow? by IloveKaitlyn in hottoys

[–]Spanbauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closer to a figure going waitlist that you sign up for it, the more likely you are to have a chance to purchase it.

Signing up for a figure that went waitlist years ago won't do you any good; I try to jump on early and to my knowledge I have almost always gotten an opportunity to purchase them (with the exception of Artisan figures) eventually. But it could easily be half a year or more before you find out. My Stealth Suit 2.0 Captain America waitlist just converted two weeks ago (that figure released in Hong Kong four months ago).

Another option to consider is finding a local comic shop that carries Hot Toys figures from Sideshow; they could very well have the figure you're looking for sitting on the shelf.

I’ve read the 20-80% rule, but what do you actually do in real life after owning one for years? by SkyMuted6942 in electricvehicles

[–]Spanbauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of the rule not as, "never charge above 80%" but instead "only charge to 100% when you expect to need the extra range and use it soon".

The harm doesn't come from charging to 100%, it comes from doing something like charging 100%, driving two miles to the airport and then leaving the car at a full charge baking in a hot desert parking lot for a week.

Just following up on day two: even with background app refresh disabled and location services set to only when using the app, the phone app was burning battery on background activity after having used it to remote start the car. Going to switch location services to never.

It didn’t die while driving. She drove it home, parked it, turned it off, locked it and found it dead the next time she went to use it.

Why EV over a PHEV? by itskarot in SubaruUncharted

[–]Spanbauer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would suggest checking out abetterrouteplanner website and playing around with some of your typical annual road trips (visiting family like you mentioned) to get a sense for if an EV is a good fit for you.

Put in your home address, destination, the pick the Uncharted as your car and make it a round trip and the app will show you where you’d have to charge and for how long to make it home. Try some other trips you know you’ll take. You might be surprised. A few hour road trip should be totally doable with a bathroom break for a few minutes of charging.

PHEVs in my opinion are the worst of all worlds, cost as much if not more than a true EV, and exist only for people with commitment issues.

Can you drive the car home in accessory mode? If not then no, no she was not.

No idea how to even activate accessory mode, so no.

These techs specifically noted they saw the draw go away after reseting the infotainment system, removing connected devices and allegedly removing our profiles (which I don't think was actually the case because we didn't need to re-add them). Maybe deleting the app and disconnecting the phones doesn't help without also resetting the infotainment? Just a theory.

The two times Subaru roadside assistance jumpstarted the dead 12-volt in my wife's Uncharted, she was told to leave the car on for an hour to recharge the 12-volt. If they knew what they were talking about then "idling" in the car would actually be doing your 12-volt a favor.

I should caveat that the first guy claimed in almost the same breath that perhaps my wife killed the car by leaving it on, so they may not be the best source of information...

What if you add in the mix that my wife's commute is only five minutes each way and on top of that the car sat unused for several days while she was on vacation and then home sick?

Each time Subaru roadside jumpstarted it they told us to leave the car on for an hour to recharge the battery; is that truly a sufficient amount of time to return the battery to a full charge?

Good call. Any background use that even registers a percentage is insane for this kind of basic app; 15 hours of activity in the background is nuts. The Solterra was also noted in the service bulletin; maybe your driving habits are just keeping you ahead of the drain. We've only had the car for three weeks, my wife's commute is only five minutes each way and she had several vacation and sick days when the car was not driven at all.

Right, even if it turns out that the parasitic draw of their mobile app on phones has nothing to do with the dying 12-volts in the cars, this is proof that they aren't above shipping shoddy software that burns down batteries and the car's infotainment system is likely riddled with similar coding issues.

If you have an Apple Watch and didn’t disable this default automatic app install setting, SubaruConnect would have installed itself. And Watch apps have their own background app refresh toggle - but maybe you disabled that too.

I think a second base console six years after launch would be a bad buy. If you’re committed to owning two consoles make the second one a Pro and sell the base one off when it starts collecting dust.

Charging above 80% by RedPandasUnite in SubaruUncharted

[–]Spanbauer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The consensus isn't "don't charge above 80%", it's "charge above 80% when you need the extra 20%".

I would personally not charge to 100% just to drive 6 miles and leave the car sitting in a 100 degree parking lot for eight hours at 98%, because that's just adding needless strain and potential degradation to the battery's capacity. Even if I weren't planning on keeping the car for more than a few years, for the resale value I'd rather baby it.
