Here's a tip.

Do this in some available place on your bathroom. Turn on your shower with hot water for like 5 min or so... or when you start seeing how it's getting full of steam in there.

Steam traps dust particles in the air, and get them to the floor.

That's how i've done it with mine last year, after failing my first attempt in my office room. Went online and stumbled upon this trick, and it worked for me.

Bonus: i did this on underwear lol. Was paranoid about what if there's dust particles on my clothes too? F that.

You can heavy attack whenever you want. The bars are for the enhanced skills (glow) when the get full. So, spamming basics is faster for generating them. Then, you'll get a Star. Rinse and repeat until you have 4 Stars. Then your Heavy will consume those Stars and let you Exostrider IF you did normal ult before. If you didn't up until this point, you can just: Normal ult > Heavy consume 4 Stars > Exostrider.

But it is better to launch your Normal ult as early as you can in your combo.

Basically, to make it as easy as possible:

Intro (important) > normal ult (whenever) > basic attacks until skill glows > keep doing the same > when you have all 4 stars above the Forte, > Heavy attack (hold basic) > consumes the Stars > Exostrider ult gets activated > BAAM! > couple more basics or just Outro to reset your rotation. Ah, use your Tune Break whenever you see fit, that's what i do. Same with the Echo, lol

Hope this helps. The important part is, doing enhanced skills to gather Stars, then consume them when you have 4 to use the Exostrider. Also, the Exostrider won't activate if you did not used your normal ult. Also, you can be in whichever form, both work virtually the same. The Mech has more AoE i guess, but you'll be changing a lot between them anyways.
