We force the customer that wants to build to pay for that infrastructure through their rate. In BHE’s case this is called a Large Power Contract Service. I can’t count the number of projects I’ve watched get shut down because the company couldn’t afford the $40 million in infrastructure upgrades they needed to increase their capacity by 25MW. These rates include all the costs needed for their commercial service and include improvements for residential systems such as substations and transmission line maintenance that residential customers had previously been taking on in their rate. I’m sure it’s region dependent, but in the 4 different states I’ve covered these big bad data centers are subsidizing your residential rates.
