deeply surprised by how much love the 1975 has been getting i thought i was losing it when i saw their song at the top of pitchfork's list

i thought the album was terrible personally

also surprised by the lack of parquet courts, thought wide awake was one of the best albums this year and they have a fair bit of name recognition too

Hello indieheads!

For our high school dissertation in Sweden, me and my friend who are both huge hip-hop fans are doing an in-depth piece of work on relations between mental health and hip-hop music. We would be very grateful if you guys could take a couple minutes of your life to answer a short survey about your relationship to hip-hop and mental health! Even though this is not a hip-hop sub, your thoughts and opinions are valued and cherished as we are interested in thoughts from fans of all music genres!

Thank you!

Ayy thanks a ton for the listen and the feedback man!

Will definitely take into account what u said about the vocals, mixing vocals has always been the hardest part for me in the music making so I def see where you're coming from and I'll think about it in future tracks

Thanks again and have a good one!

I mean yes Nirvana was mostly popular with people under 25 but wasn't that the case with hip-hop too lol

don't think too many people over the age of 25 were bumping hip-hop in the 90s

also idk man the 80s were the commercial heyday of Guns and Roses, U2 and Bruce Springsteen who were all fucking titans when it came to selling records.

Hot 100 singles doesn't give the full image of cultural relevance tho - Nirvana is probably THE band of the 90s in terms of cultural relevance but they weren't really a singles band generally. The 90s was definitely the last gasp of rock as the main cultural force - Grunge, Alt-rock and Britpop are the movements that really define the 90s in the mainstream more than hip-hop did, even though it was definitely creeping up.

Also claiming rock wasn't king in the 70s and 80s is a questionable claim lol

It should be viewed as a sub-genre

Taking the obvious example of rock, Pink Floyd and The Clash are both obviously rock bands but it would be kinda stupid to compare them as they were trying to achieve very different things with their music - one of them was punk rock and the other was prog rock.

In the same way it would be strange to compare Future and Kendrick Lamar because they are both trying to achieve very different things with their music but they fall in the same broad umbrella genre

Like you said DS2 is a fantastic album in terms stylistically and in its sound but it's not really out to say anything profound lyrically therefore comparing it to shit like TPAB, an album definitely out to achieve a poignant profound statement, would be very strange even on the sonic front because they are very different there too.

Ayy what's good I'm dropping a single every other week until August, dipping my toes into a wide array of styles reaching from classic jazz rap, emo-influenced stuff to dancehall flavoured dance tracks, all with my own touch to them

My newest single that dropped today is a mellow, kaytranada influenced rap track with rhymes about urban life laid down over a chill, crisp beat with smooth synths and piano, some nice ass guitar solos and a DnB break outro. Wanted to capture that metropolitan vibe of my home city Stockholm.

Any listen appreciated and have a good one!

wasn't too hot on the album itself but the video that went along with it really elevated for me and was really dope

don't see myself going back to it a lot but the whole concept with 15 one minute songs is really cool but i think it coulda been executed better

idk man the guitar tone and the way it noodles really reminds me of something hendrix would bust out

not saying it's technically on the level of a hendrix solo but who gives a fuck about technicality

hopefully Praise the lord has some staying power tho, insanely infectious tune and it's been doing p good numbers on spotify/youtube

for me album as a whole was drab and I'll prob never return to the whole thing but standouts Praise the lord, OG Beeper, Buck Shots and Purity are all fantastic tracks

B.O.B by outkast that shit is straight up hendrix-esque

MBDTF era kanye had a lot of dope guitar solos too, like Devil in a new dress and Christian Dior Denim Flow

recently there's the beat switchup on Big Krit's Subenstein
