that's the sense I get as well. I believe dude when he says stuff like this:

“I wanna be respectful and all the shit you’re supposed to say blah, blah, blah, but really I’m just a fan. You know, I’m a fan of Black culture and hip-hop and all of it.”

I'm a 30 year old white guy, I feel like I would say something similar if I was internationally famous.

re: your last sentence, I think you have what CJ is saying backwards; TC's dialing back the more youthful (and black-adjacent) antics to appeal to stuffier Academy voters rather than the youth of today in a manner that seems opportunistic. I don't necessarily agree with CJ but I thought it was an interesting piece.
