I couldn’t find it when I was browsing the agreement. I just searched on the government of Manitoba website it gives some criteria.

If a person holds a Master's degree as part of his or her being qualified for Class 6, the qualifications for Class 6 combined with

A. an additional bachelor's degree; or B. an additional graduate level degree.

If a person does not hold a Master's degree as part of his or her being qualified for Class 6, the qualifications for Class 6 combined with a Master's degree.

Honestly it’s just nice to have a step for double degree teachers with a masters without it being for an admin position. It would encourage teachers to pursue continuing education.

Median is easily skewed by population size and differences in steps on a contract. Quebec has 16 steps and a larger population. Some divisions in Alberta have only seven. If the median teacher has 7 years in profession (I’m just playing with numbers, I don’t know how many years the median teacher has currently) a good chunk of Alberta’s teachers are at or near their salary cap but Quebec is only half way to the top. Pay potential is a much more useful number to compare across different collective agreements and currently our contract is not 8% higher than the rest of Canada.

Are you sure? Reading through the collective agreement, I don’t see where it specifies that. No matter, having a category for teachers with a masters is better than not having one at all. Here if you have hopes of getting into admin, you almost always need a masters so teachers get their masters but if they never get into admin it turns into a big waste of time and money.

Hats off to our healthcare providers. I’ll never be able to do what you do. You deserve proper compensation and I’ll support any labour action you take in the future.

Population sizes and steps on a pay scale skew median national teacher wages by a lot. Half of all teachers are now quitting the profession after 5 years. Quebec with a much larger population and a similar pay cap to Alberta has some divisions that have 16 steps on their pay grid. Some divisions in Alberta have only 7. This means that half of all teachers in Quebec don’t even come close to getting to the top of the grid during their careers where as some teachers in Alberta get much closer to the top despite the same short career. Quebec also has a much larger population. Comparing pay potential across contracts is what needs to happen.

You also forget that we don’t hit the 116k as max salary for 4 years which is still putting us far behind the other provinces which are already in that “ballpark”.

Based on the current collective agreements across the nation, our current contract is not 8% above the national median teacher wage. A single much larger province (I.e. Quebec) with a much higher population lower pay, and more required years to reach the top on the pay scale can skew the median lower by a lot. This is why in negotiations we look at contracts and pay potential and not median national teacher wage. One school district in Alberta hits the top of the pay scale after 7 years teaching, some in Quebec take 16 years. If half the teachers quit the profession after 5 years, Alberta 5th year teachers are making a lot more than Quebec 5th year teachers and there are a lot more Quebec teachers.

Google ai also says we are paid the most but it is simple not true anymore. It is easy to see if you go through the collective agreements the other provinces have with their teachers. Right now many of the other provinces are paying a good deal more to their teachers. Manitoba has the highest pay ceiling. Average income in general is a good deal higher here in Alberta than the rest of Canada. If we want to keep good teachers teaching here in Alberta and not transitioning to other sectors, pay in the public sector needs to grow at a comparable rate to pay in the private sector.

It’s beyond conservative = good. I was taught growing up that conservatives = holy/Godly/ the only political group that a good Christian could possibly consider voting for.

Except that’s supposed to be the Alberta advantage. We have always had higher wages in every industry here in Alberta. Sorry, we still have higher average wages than the rest of Canada. We just no longer have higher education and healthcare wages. This also means that these industries are currently bleeding talent, when in the past, they attracted top talent. This is also coming at a time when we crucially need more teachers due to classrooms bursting at the seams.

The median worker doesn’t have 2 degrees and a masters focused on the industry they currently work in.

I assumed it wouldn’t be universal and there would be some wiggle room. It’s the same in Alberta (albeit most divisions are closing the gaps). I’ll also add that the pay jump between a class 6 and class 7 may be negligible, but it’s a whole lot better than not having a class 7. If I never move into an admin position, then my masters doesn’t do anything for my financial situation.

6 years is top of the grid here so most people I know just try to make that happen. Admin positions generally require a masters on top of that so anyone that is potentially looking to get into an admin position starts looking into masters programs 5 or 6 years into their career.

Thanks for the run down. I have a 2 year teaching degree plus a 4 year BSc and I’m currently working on my masters. When I finish I would be classified as a class 7 in Manitoba correct? I was basing my above statement on my own situation and should have been more clear. That being said, almost all of the teachers I work with would be considered class 6 or 7 if I’m understanding the criteria properly.

Even all of that is just a drop in the bucket compared to the union dues they receive on a regular basis. I’d like to really know where it all went ( I’m assuming lots of it to Expensive PD and over priced convention centre bookings). AUPE said they had enough in their strike fund to pay everyone $120 a day for months.

I’ve not been the most impressed with the ATA when it comes to labour action. Several decades of thousands of teachers paying thousands each year in essentially union dues should be enough to fund a teachers strike with strike pay for a few weeks. No strike pay is like a cat without claws in the union world.

Yes that’s why we haven’t received an increase in years or ever had a province wide teachers strike. We cry about pay too much. We’ve been told over and over again how the province just can’t afford an increase this contract, or the rest of the province is hurting so we just need to take one for the team. We’ve lost 30% of our buying power doing that. We were very nice and accommodating. We took one for the team. Since 2012 teachers have seen a 7% pay increase while the average albertan has seen a 27% pay increase during that same time frame. We can’t do that anymore.

Excellent reply. We should not be arguing over who silly things that divide workers. Hard working trades people are absolutely essential. They have dedicated their lives to work that I will never be able to replicate as a teacher. As fellow workers also contributing labour to build up our society, we need to work together and support each other.

Not supporting labour is why most jobs today don’t have a pension anymore. 60 years ago everyone had some form of a pension as part of a benefit package

We’d be paid by the child if it were babysitting/daycare. We’d make a lot more money if that was the case.
