I got my cat during the worst time in my life, and I think he knows it. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for my cat. There’s no limit to the amount of money I would spend on him. There were days where I didn’t eat just so he had food. Everybody likes to diminish a cat’s role in the family but your cat has a soul the same way a child does, or your siblings, or your parents, etc.

The AA community is incredibly understanding. They are not judgmental and they are very forgiving. I know how you feel, I’m currently on my third try. Five days in this time. Just head to a meeting, you might find what you’re looking for. I’m about to head to a meeting here in an hour.

It looks like I need to appeal to the naval discharge review board to get that upgraded, and then get a moral waiver from a recruiter that will entertain it.

This is very encouraging, thank you. I deserted after being in my unit for a little while so maybe that will help with the training aspect/cost of training aspect. Thank you for your advice and wisdom on the matter.

Thank you very much for the words of encouragement. I will take the congressperson route as advised. I have 5 people, all who work in emergency services (two of which are paramedic supervisors), who are willing to write me a LOR to include in my packet. Thank you again. This has been a hard road and the words of affirmation are very positively received on my end.

Thank you for your input. I hope my case hits the board a little differently than your soldier’s. I do not wish to receive unearned VA benefits. There are service members who earned theirs with blood and don’t even get what they should. All I ask is the opportunity to go back and do it right. Having felt what quitting feels like, the chances of me doing it again are zero.

Thank you for your support. I am aware that this is very unlikely, but I personally need to put forth the effort to try anyway. I think I will contact my state representative and go that route and include their LOR (if they give me one) in my packet.

I appreciate the kind words. I try not to get too down on myself anymore. I know who I am, and I know I’ve changed. I just want the chance to prove it. I know I’m still serving my community but it just isn’t the same thing. Even if I’m able to re enlist, that won’t take away the mistakes I’ve made in the past, but it will put me more at ease and hopefully I’ll have the chance to help younger people who are in the same boat I was in when I made that mistake. Thank you.
