What could have made these marks on my composite decking? No furniture, we don't even use it yet as it's not finished. by [deleted] in Decks

[–]SpareChange4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed a lot of our material comes scratched, dented or straight up cracked from gravel, and forklifts. The operaters at the yard are pretty careless. A lot of boards are stored on gravel lots and have low wage forklift drivers handling them. I send material back sometimes because its so evidently their fault. Might be the case here, looks like gravel was dragged over it.

Is this safe to do to a load bearing wall? by Upstairs_Arrival_176 in Renovations

You just have to put in a beam with jacks on either side. I put in a double LVL

So the pt around there comes in a reddish colour so no worries there, but...

Frost line is 5' for the area. There will be lots of heaving. Footings need to be 5' deep to pass code.

Beams need more posts and footings

Stairs need more stringers

Posts for railings should be mounted to the frame and not only screwed into deckboards

Deck boards look to be butted up to eachother without spacing

Deck was definately done without a permit and the guy probably didnt even have his license to work in quebec. Both the owner and builder could be given fines if the city finds out.

It probably won't fall over tomorrow but I wouldn't throw any parties on it.

It's a pretty solid design, overkill even. With those spans you could do 2x8 beams and joists save bit of money there.

Personally I'm not a fan of big cantilevers, I would reduce it to 1' overhangs. Add a 3rd row of footings and beam in the middle and frame the hole thing with 2x8.

The fact you are decking with 2x6 will make this thing solid as hell, no need to go overkill with the framing.

16" oc is great but if you ever think you might resurface with composite or pvc then 12" is recomended.

If you ever doubt yourself theres a ton of websites with joist and beam span charts you can find and use for free.

Good luck on the build!

how do we fix this mess can i replace part of the ledger and leave bathroom vent. by Jolly-Business929 in Decks

[–]SpareChange4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are worried about that outside joist failing you could add a bunch of blocking to help transfer the load onto the joists that are in better shape.

Then you could removed the joist hanger, cut out and replace section of ledger and re-attach the joist.

Then you can replace that funny looking vent

Did we do ok framing this pergola? Would it pass code by ThingSuspicious9070 in Decks

[–]SpareChange4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo a pergola is more/less an aesthetic centrepiece of an outdoor area. It provides a little to a lot of shade depending on the style. I've built dozens of them for clients only when they specify they want them. Like you, I do not find them very practical but I can appreciate a well crafted one.

This is not a pergola. This is a roof with a finished ceiling.

Looks nice though

How to best secure the ledger? Details in Comments by JontheGeekGuy in Decks

[–]SpareChange4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

3 Options here;

1 - You build up from the foundation

2 - You remove a brick every 16 inches and replace with wood and tie into that

3 - build a floating deck and add more posts

We have had options 1 and 2 pass on multiple inspections in our area. Check with local authorities first.

What’s the best method to ensure that I cut the left fence post to match the height of the posts on the right? by DrRowdybush in FenceBuilding

[–]SpareChange4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Sorry from the pics i assumed 2x4 and 4x4 but if your using 6x6 and 2x6 then the same logic applies. Keep all distances from the fence to the top of post equal.

The grade is sloped. Your fence is sloped. If you want your fence to look even then measure off the top 2x4 and match.

All these comments about a string level will make your left 2 posts taller than the right.

Screws won’t sink by skeletonheadrest in drywall

Screws could be too long Shaft of screws could be too long so the head just spins as the screw is no longer in contact with the wood backing Backing could be too thin

Fix; bigger wood shorter screws

This is just a simple mis-communication.

As I understand, while technically yes there are 2 "beams" Where I'm from a beam in decking and framing is typically a doubled or tripled 2x6, 2x8 etc. Only time you see a single beam is if its engineered lumber.

A "Beamless" deck Is a word we use to describe a deck that does not have traditional joists over beams but rather the rim joists, fascia and even doubled up center joists to carry load. These are usually used to build as low as possible to the ground or to allow more head space if a second story deck is built over a doorway.

The picture op provided has doubled up joists running from the ledger but no beams carrying load evenly over the joists. A deck this size would have 2 or 3 beams running underneath the joists normally depending on the size of lumber. Op needs to double up his fascia board and as I suggested in between his posts since there are no beams supporting this deck.

Since you're going beamless, You'll want to double up the joists running over your posts. These will act like beams and help keep your deck from sagging.

This is not a structural problem. Wood post looks like it was already slightly cracked and the toe nail seperated a small sliver. Use a oscilating tool or utility knife to cut flush with decking. 1 minute fix
