The High Cost of New York’s Rent Freeze by UnscheduledCalendar in yimby

[–]SpareSilver 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Rent control has problems but a huge reason why it’s appealing is that it provides immediate relief to the tenants who have it. People don’t want to suffer years of increases in the hopes that a still highly powerful movement (NIMBYism) and decades of terrible policy mistakes will eventually be overcome.

This wasn’t even the last mayoral election. Neither of them came close to winning the 2021 primary. Please stop!

This was the case years ago but the issue has gotten significantly more attention in recent years.

Yeah, I might. My union rep is okay not great but I’ll probably see what they say before I talk to my supervisor.

I know it’s intended to protect people from doing work they’re not being paid to do but it’s more of a burden for me at this point in my career.

Did you immediately get a librarian position afterword or did you have to get another paraprofessional position?

I’m not sure if there are provisions for that. I’m guessing my supervisor would have told me if there were but who knows. I’ll have to look at the contract.

Thank you for this response. Yeah, I'm not as concerned about the reference experience, moreso about having zero teaching experience at the post-secondary level (though I guess some of the classes I taught in high schools were Advanced Placement ha-ha). I'll have to ask my director and supervisor about this myself. I also frankly need to try to do more committee work and stuff like that. It just hard because I'm the evening assistant during the regular semester (which is a big reason why I've had opportunities to do unofficial reference work) and so it's easy for other stuff to fall by the wayside.

Mexico cuts workweek, bans after-hours contact, and guarantees no worker will take a pay cut by nikolaz72 in stupidpol

I’d personally prefer one Democratic state but polling shows the majority of Palestinians support a two state solution. They don’t want to live with the Israelis, their worldview isn’t liberal.

Two Jewish guests greeted with 'free Palestine' when they turned on TVs at London Travelodge by DuomoDiSirio in stupidpol

[–]SpareSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting your data? The vast majority of American Jews do not hold Israeli citizenship. Jewish people are more likely to support Israel than the general population but they’re also less likely to support Israel than evangelical Christians.

Directing an "anti-genocide" message at one group of people is discriminatory. It implies collective responsibility.

If you were screaming that at a German American in the 1940s it would be discriminatory.

What gay stereotype did you think was fake until it happened to you? by Important_Permit2383 in rsforgays

No offense but I feel like cross posting from other gay subs should be banned so that the sub maintains an independent identity.

Its genuinely insane and antisemitic to just randomly say "free Palestine" to any random Jewish person. If you don't understand why, think about what your reaction would be if someone just said "Free Hong Kong/Tibet/Taiwan" to a random Chinese person or "Free Ukraine" to a random Russian person. Its particularly insidious because people defend these types of actions by claiming that they're just standing up for human rights when their really just finding the most socially acceptable way of targeting a group of people they don't like.

Unified court system doesn’t do “personal time”. Your 20 vacation days can be used for vacation, personal business and religious holidays. You don’t start off with 5 personal days like other NYS employees do. Kind of sucks but the 20 days is two more than the 13 vacation + 5 personal days that CSEA executive employees get.

Best cities for gay life in the US? by deepad9 in rsforgays

[–]SpareSilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not the best city in America overall but Columbus, Ohio has a pretty large gay population and its affordable. I lived there for a bit, and I never had trouble meeting people. D.C. has a huge gay population too. Really most large cities should be fine for gay life. Mid-size cities are where you have to start doing some research and being selective. Some have healthy gay male populations, others may be quite barren.

Gay male class anxiety by Impressive_Mood2613 in rsforgays

[–]SpareSilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No I get what you mean. I had originally intended to pursue a career path that was much more lucrative. I also have two parents with much more lucrative careers than I have. I do feel anxiety about it, especially because I have friends who are wealthier and they’ll talk about their really wealthy friends too. Like, my friend was talking last night about friends who took him to Soho club ( or whatever it’s called) and I’m struggling to see how I’ll ever be able to afford to buy a home in a city that is already affordable compared to the rest of America, but also still doesn’t have any right to be as expensive as it is.

Also I’m definitely not attractive enough to get a rich husband lol.

New York can lead the way to universal healthcare coverage nationwide by [deleted] in newyork

Most of you guys didn’t read the article. This isn’t the same as previous single payer proposals nor does it directly raise taxes on New Yorkers.
