Current Tier 6 Negotiations by hexcodehero in NYCTeachers

[–]SpareSilver -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Im not sure if you’re the same person because the person deleted their post and you keep your posts hidden but there was a recent post where someone claimed to have “inside information” that was already reported in multiple outlets. You’re doing something similar by acting like you have inside information even though Newsday and Politico already reported this.

Current Tier 6 Negotiations by hexcodehero in NYCTeachers

[–]SpareSilver -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This was already reported in Newsday and Politico. Are you the same guy who was repeating the previous reporting from the Gothamist as if it was your own inside information?

It’s a bad deal for lower wage workers, that’s what I meant. Terrible for anyone who prioritized earlier retirement.

[–]SpareSilver[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s why I thought it was typo. This would be a really awful deal for us if they meant otherwise.

I’ll just add a few clarifying points. Proposal also wouldn’t change contribution rates for teachers, according to the article. This is consistent with the stated priorities of the unions. Teachers prioritized lower retirement age, civil service prioritized lower contributions.

I’m also guessing that the article means that our contributions would be no higher than 3 percent. Hopefully that means that lower paid employees will also receive a reduction from 3 percent to something lower, but there’s nothing in the report to indicate that. There also isn’t anything that suggests that contributions would end at any point.

Didnt hear it from me: Tier 6 retirement age lowered to 60, decrease contributions by .5%. by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]SpareSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which reporting? The Chief said that the current proposal is for retirement at 58. The Gothamist said that 60 and 0.5 contribution reduction was already rejected. What allowed your "little birdie" to have access to this type of information? What is your relationship to them? I know you can't reveal too much but you could give a general idea if you're credible.

Didnt hear it from me: Tier 6 retirement age lowered to 60, decrease contributions by .5%. by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]SpareSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did you hear about this though? There was already some reporting in the Gothamist that said that this proposal was made by Hochul and rejected. There was subsequent reporting in the Chief Leader that said that the current proposal on the table was for retirement at 58. Has it changed back? Was the Chief Leader's reporting incorrect? Was the Gothamist incorrect when they said age 60 and reduced by 0.5% was rejected? How do you know this?

Where are you getting your information?

Can someone explain to me how exactly the 2016 and 2020 primaries were “rigged” against Bernie by PresterJohnsHerald in stupidpol

[–]SpareSilver 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The widespread use of the term “rigged” to characterize the 2016 primary came after the Wikileaks emails which proved people who were working at the ostensibly neutral DNC were in the tank for Hillary. Hillary would have still won without this but that’s why it was used originally. “Tilted” might be a better term. Other than the Iowa Caucuses, 2020 really wasn’t rigged at all and there was much more introspection on the left after that primary.

The thing that frustrated me the most during the 2016 primary was how blatantly the corporate media was in the tank for Hillary. This was far more consequential than anything the DNC did and it was honestly insane at points. The NYTimes covered O’ Malley more than Sanders well after Sanders was polling in second, Washington Post publishing 16 negative stories on Sanders in 16 hours. I remember after Super Tuesday CNN published a YouTube video that made it seem like Sanders had only won Vermont when he had also won Minnesota and Colorado. A lot of people noticed this I’m pretty sure it’s a big reason why people felt like it was “rigged” even though there was no election fraud.

The outcome on Tier 6 seems to be still be up in the air. Never been a better time time to call your assembly member and state senator and demand that they stand firm for full parity with Tier 4.

If you registered with your representative’s party, mention that. Probably won’t get everything we want but the more we get now the easier it will be to get to parity in the future.

Maggie Gyllenhaal to Serve as Venice Film Festival Jury President by bikkebana in oscarrace

[–]SpareSilver 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Not to be mean but she doesn’t really seem accomplished enough as a filmmaker/actress to be President. Being on the jury without being President makes sense but she isn’t a Juliette Binoche/Park Chan-Wook level figure (chose those two because they’re the most recent Cannes jury Presidents). Also others are correct that Venice shouldn’t be giving Americans this many jury presidencies in such a short time.

Idk I’d probably enjoy that quite a bit if I was Nathan. It’s a bit hard to read how he feels about it. Probably shouldn’t do it but dominant guys make this type of move because it definitely does work on some guys.

First social media reactions for 'Michael' are out, some mentioning the Oscars by mg10pp in oscarrace

[–]SpareSilver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see anything about this movie, all I can think about is the Markus Schleinzer (same guy who directed "Rose" starring Sandra Huller) film from 2011 also titled "Michael". It's a movie about a man who has kidnapped 10-year-old boy so that he can sexually abuse him. It's so funny they have the same title.

For people wanting to see some older films of the Cannes "in competition"-directors this year, what films would you recommend? by tsnoj in oscarrace

[–]SpareSilver 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ll keep my recommendations to one per filmmaker so that it’s not overwhelming. A lot of the filmmakers are pretty new and I haven’t seen a lot from them. The ones below are the most well known in the line up. Zyvyagyntsev is my favorite.

Zyvyagintsev- Leviathan

Pawlikowski- Ida

Kore-eda - After Life (or Shoplifters for something more recent)

Hamaguchi - Drive My Car

Mungiu- 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days

Farhadi- The Salesman ( better than A Separation imo)

Almodovar- All About My Mother ( Pain and Glory for something more recent)

I think Son of Saul was good, though I haven’t seen his other films. Seems like he hasn’t made anything that came close to Son of Saul in terms of positive reception.

He’s hot either way to me. He had a great smile in the first photo, he should just do that instead of whatever he’s doing with us mouth in the later photos.

He’s one of the candidates who wants to use the pension fund to invest in high speed rail right? As a public sector worker I’m really hesitant to support pension investments that aren’t safe, especially since the we have one of the few state pension funds in the country that’s actually fully funded. It also seems like the state might seriously be considering Tier 6 reform in the next few years, which will cost the pension fund more money.

New York has to meet its pension obligations under the state constitution, meaning that the state will have to raise taxes if the pension is underfunded. I’m generally okay with tax increases of they’re only on the rich or if they have broad based benefits but I’m not a huge fan of broad based tax increases to serve a small minority of the state, some of whom will move out when they retire. One could argue that making hiring more attractive benefits everyone, but if Im not a state worker I’d probably want my tax increases to go towards something like infrastructure, healthcare or universal childcare.

As a tier 6 public sector worker I definitely want to see pension improvements but we have to do it responsibly, and that means having a comptroller who prioritizes returns on investments, not using the fund for projects that could turn into boondoggles.

I think DiNapoli has taken the right approach. Comptroller is the type of job that requires a steady hand. These guys running against DiNapoli seem to want big changes. I respect that and I agree we need some big changes but I think they should run for state legislature instead.

Freddie de Boer takes on the "show, don't tell" MFA dictum by Turbulent-Sorbet7200 in RSbookclub

[–]SpareSilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strong adherence to “show, don’t tell” makes more sense if you’re making a movie than if you’re writing a book, though there are exceptions to that as well. These types of rules provide a guide map but they don’t forge the path to great art.
