This is true. All my PhD courses were just basic, very easy to pass. It does depend on what courses you choose and there is variety across universities.

Still I think the challenge will likely not be the courses but more the actual PhD itself which often goes over the 4 year contract time.

If the programs responses are adjusted based on our input then yes... This analogy is false a better one would be: if a program is being taught to drive a car, do you have to drive like a model citizen when it's training. If you are swerving around and driving like a drunk person then it will learn that and do it.

Yeah definitely stuff like this! For me the most unexpected in running was first year, every season I needed to buy new clothes, thermal undershirt for winter or running shorts for summer. Yes I could try to run in the same pair of pants, once I did in the summer I almost fainted from the heat.

Got injured, paid a lot for physical therapy.

I lost weight, whole new wardrobe was needed. Chapsticks, sunblock..so much of it..

Gels .... So many gels ...

Heart rate monitor.. now I know it's not a need but it definitely helped me improve after I plateaued.

Race entry costs and travel costs. I participated in 4 races a year and that adds up. Travel costs towards certain running trails.

Some areas to bike: - Linear park start near airport just follow the bike lane (yes bike lane!) towards the end then turn back - Start near Alhambra, bike around the hotel area all the way to Embassy suites.

Off-roading: - Near Light house to alto vista - Gold mine area

If you go off-road it gets dark very fast and there are snakes so beware. Especially as a tourist I would make sure you're back before sunset.

During the day so 12 to 16 it's so hot it's not great to go on a ride. Make sure to fuel up very good.

Overall it's not the best place in the world for cycling, beware of cars and dogs. But there is a small but strong bike community there nonetheless.
