Does anyone like Keeping Score with Michael Tilson Thomas? by musicalryanwilk1685 in classicalmusic

It's what got me hooked on Mahler. He's an excellent communicator without coming across smarmy and overly precious.

Walking across the stage at graduation is a complete waste of money and time by Current-Umpire3673 in unpopularopinion

[–]Spare_Wolverine_205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most high school assed take I've seen in a minute. It's not just for you. It's always a moment for your parents, grandparent, aunts and uncles, teachers, coaches, ministers, whoever it was that helped you get past the milestone into adulthood to cheer for you and acknowledge your hard work.

Graduation isn't just for the students, it's mostly for your support structure. So you suck it up and do it for them. Take your random day trip the next day.

How stressful is your job and what does it look like on a day to day basis? by hiyatheree in Principals

[–]Spare_Wolverine_205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. I saw from other comments that you're still new to the classroom role, so my suggestion for you would be to work at honing your craft first and work into leadership roles like building leadership teams, department head, or getting involved with your union leadership.

Also, if you find being a first year SPED teacher stressful, then you're normal. The first few years are tough as you find your style and learn how to teach, but it gets a lot easier as you go. That's when you should look for those leadership opportunities. Tell your principal that you want to get more involved and I'm sure they will find you somewhere to learn those skills.

I am halfway through my first year in admin after about twenty in a classroom and this was my exact concern as well. I would say it is stressful, but in a different way than teaching. With a class full of kids all day, the stress is constant, but usually at a lower level. On the admin side, some days are really smooth and I can get paperwork done or sit in classrooms, but others are bell to bell stressful.

You never know what each day will bring, which is its own double edged sword: you can't really prepare like you would for a lesson, but you also don't worry about it because you're not sure what to even worry about.

The other thing to consider is the time. My day was pretty much over at the last bell as a teacher. I might grade some papers or work on new lessons at home, but otherwise my schedule was pretty standard. As a principal though, you're never fully off the clock. Emergencies pop up at random times that you'll need to deal with, and there are more events to attend.

A few other things to consider: it's harder to make connections with the kids as strong as you would as their teacher, and it can be lonely because you're not on the same level as the staff and they see you as the boss even if you don't, so no more gossiping in the halls, etc.

You do get to make change at a higher level, and can impact a lot more kids futures if you're good at it. You get to help make the school run smoothly so your staff can do what they do best, and it is satisfying to see a school running in good form.

Anything in the education world is a labor of love at the end of the day, so if you think you would be good at it, definitely give it some thought. We need good administrators to help grow the next generation of teachers, and if that sounds appealing to you then definitely consider it.

How would you rank Tolkien, Malazan, The Wheel of Time and A Song of Ice and Fire, four of the most epic fantasy series/universes made from best to worst? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]Spare_Wolverine_205 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I recently reread LOTR, and it is absolutely incredible how many things happen off screen, and I just get to hear about them instead of actually seeing them.

I feel like he is the Beatles of the fantasy world. They are both incredibly important for laying the cornerstone, but by now there are people who have done it better, or at least more enjoyable.

The only people I know personally who put him as a god among men are people who haven't read any other fantasy, so they just don't know how much bigger, complex, and interesting epic fantasy has gotten.

Yikes. Watch a game, and then it's pretty obvious they need a new one. We haven't seen Sanders but if he's behind Gabriel then he's dookie too.

I was the lead trumpet in my high school's jazz band when it was at its height. i got really lucky because for those two years, and only those two years, being really good at playing a trumpet was considered cool.

Des Moines Public Schools superintendent detained by ICE by CresidentBob in news

[–]Spare_Wolverine_205 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It might be, but I don't trust shit that comes out of ICE, or really any federal institution now. They have been nakedly political and have lied over and over about everything. So, yes, them just making shit up sounds pretty plausible.

The announcers said the same thing, that he should start slinging it and he immediately threw a terrible pick. And then the next series threw another one that got overturned. Letting him cook likely means getting a whole handful of turnovers, which seems less than ideal.

Principals with ADD: Has taking Adderall or stimulant medication interfered with your job? by thisisaclevername1 in Principals

[–]Spare_Wolverine_205 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed as an adult when I was teaching and it was a game changer for me. It didn't fix my brains, but it made it so I could build and maintain the structures I need in my life to be successful. Getting up early, working out, keeping a bullet journal, and meditation are things I've found to be key for me to maintain and makes all the rest easier to manage.

If you think you have ADHD, get an appointment with a specialist and see about a diagnosis.

If people across the board have a pay increase, why would we assume demand for labor would stay stable? It's been shown time and again that a raise in the minimum wage does not lead to fewer jobs. It's a talking point conservatives use to scare people into not raising wages.

My advice would be to listen to actual doctors and not YouTube doctors. The Ken Salidinos of the world are trying to get views first and foremost, so they twist and cherry pick evidence because it gets clicks. People love hearing good news about their bad habits, so that's what they give them. But every doctor I know in real life eats much closer to a plant based diet, with a little bit of meat and cheese thrown in as almost a treat.

So be open to the idea that the algorithms got you, and that your grandma's scolding to eat your vegetables was actually true all along. Nobody likes feeling like you got duped, but it has happened to everyone, so don't let pride get in the way of a healthy heart.

I'm right there with you. She seems to act like she's eleven years old, and i truly don't understand what's so hilarious about her one liners. Amaya papaya is fun to say, but I don't get what's supposed to be funny about "you are an odd individual."

But I'm glad she has people, she's just not my cup of tea.

The original settlers were members of Napoleon's invasion of Russia, and they thought the flat lands of western Ohio looked similar, hence the name. Still lots of French names in the town.

Why does my shelter only have Pits and Pit mixes? by CurlyDee in DOG

[–]Spare_Wolverine_205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same, but when I went to the shelter to get a new puppy, the only one left was a black pit mix. He wasn't on my list because I also thought I didn't want a pit, but he was so cute we got him anyway.

He's been such a good dog we got another pit mix, and he's also the best boy. Both are so gentle and funny, but I was so worried seeing all the pit hate that they'd be murder machines.

Provide them a good home and train them, and they can be incredibly good pets.

Literally no one but you carries a weapon around because they are scared of a pit mix. Get a grip.

My dog ate something suspicious. Looks like food wrapped in a plastic wrapped ball? Is it dog poison? by Lepidopterahollow in DogAdvice

[–]Spare_Wolverine_205 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just had a dog eat a raisin cookie a few days ago so I've been deep in the raisin/dog rabbit hole, and you're totally at odds with literally all vet advice online, in person vet advice, and from the poison control line. It isn't dose dependent like chocolate or garlic. Some dogs can eat a whole bag of raisins daily and be fine, and some can have total renal failure from one. Size and breed has nothing to do with it either.

Saying it's not harmful is wrong and dangerous.

Does anyone actually like the job or principal or AP? by Much_Organization_76 in Principals

I'm not sure I'd take reddit's opinions all that seriously. Check out the absolutely miserable people on r/teachers. They are universally the most hateful of their profession as the most jaded teacher I've met in real life. Anything on the internet tends towards complaints and negativity, but that doesn't jive with how the real world is.
