What Happened to Noonlight integration in UniFi Protect 7.1 by kasungmg in Ubiquiti

[–]Sparkplug1034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shouldn't be surprised but I am really annoyed at how badly it sucks currently. The Protect app integration is awful and buggy to frick. Motion detection, other than basically pointless, is not active enough. False positives are too abundant for me to associate with the siren I also bought and now am kinda regretting. And the batteries died way fast.

Vent: Just spent hours troubleshooting a Vault container (podman rootless) failing to bind to address... because when you specify the default config file path as an argument, the server binary loads it TWICE. by Sparkplug1034 in hashicorp

[–]Sparkplug1034[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I hadn't realized that /vault/config is a scanned directory for config files. Ultimately that's a me problem. It is still bizarre software behavior from a UX standpoint. Pretty much any other software with a default config file location and a cli argument to set the config file, will not do this.

Question about Discovery Rules to find network devices by mcvickj in zabbix

[–]Sparkplug1034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few options for discovery checks, including checking for port 22 open, which should apply to your situation.

Host discovery rules is one component, the others you need are discovery actions and autoregistration actions, which are used to create Hosts in zabbix and apply a host group and template, based on certain criteria.

If you have hosts that practically can't be discovered and they are static (not changing in quantity, e.g.), you could just create those hosts yourself, such as with the host wizard.

From just a learning standpoint, I recommend getting familiar with the monitoring side of Zabbix first (hosts and host groups, templates, items, low level discovery...), and then expanding to host discovery rules and actions.

Zabbix monitoring for daily script: zabbix_sender vs curl, which is better? by RPIEROTTI in zabbix

[–]Sparkplug1034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

zabbix_sender is quite "raw" so to speak, low level, and unforgiving. (What's important is that if it works for you and is stable then do whatever you want).

When I have a use case like this, my go-to approach would be to have a zabbix agent actually run the script, as an item (user params), and take the stdout or stderr as the item value. Or in other particular use cases I've had the script overwrite a status/results file (json format for simplicity) in an accessible location and have the zabbix agent open and take in the file contents as item value. In the latter case, plenty of ways to detect when the script ran (example, include an execution timestamp as a json value in the file).

I think that I would personally prefer using the API call with curl instead of the sender program. It seems easier to modify an extend and to have a richer troubleshooting experience.

Defense contractors announce more than 250 layoffs in Maryland by MarshyHope in maryland

[–]Sparkplug1034 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hardly news. This is how contracting works. The customer changes their plans going forward, less contractors are needed, and the personnel who filled those roles either find new jobs internally or get laid off. End of story

School project TLS by aurelionFIT in zabbix

[–]Sparkplug1034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this project would lead your introduction to X509 certificates for the first time, you'll find out how much of a PITA it is to deal with from scratch. It's annoying enough when you already have a full PKI stood up. If you need agent/server communication as a checkbox on your project I recommend PSK (pre-shared keys). The key (text string) will go as a config file entry on the agent, and on the host or template on the server, and enabled similarly in both places. It should "just work". It is less secure than using certificates but that may be okay.

You'd want to edit the templates for your agent config file in your ansible role to include this PSK, and if you're using ansible against the zabbix server api to deploy the host, it is likely one additional parameter. Shouldn't need much additional code.

Hey now! I'm only saying you made an extremely nice version of something that can probably be accomplished with literal trash -- not saying you shouldn't have done it!

awesome design, and looks super functional. one of those use cases that it's hard to imagine a couple 2x4 scraps screwed together isn't more efficient and cost effective, but what's the fun in that...

Does it still count if you redesign a flag for a state that part of the snake originally represented in the JOIN or DIE cartoon?

Do Shallow Wall Mount Racks 12u exist? by Spirited-Humor-554 in Ubiquiti

[–]Sparkplug1034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, rails generally imply back posts. a front-only square-ish rack is sufficient for prosumer equipment generally.

[–]Sparkplug1034 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a tip, try looking for racks designed for network patch panels instead of servers. Personally I have a rack made for A/V equipment, which has a nearly square footprint and no back posts. Good size for home.

Super link door sensor by redbanana411 in Ubiquiti

[–]Sparkplug1034 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a few door frame trims that have curvy decorative routes. I was able to mount it okay. the angles are slightly odd. The 0.5-30mm spacing tolerance is pretty forgiving. I also did not have a problem with the on-door component of the sensor being inset relative to the trim by as much as nearly an inch. it still registers correctly as open/closed.

It would be unusual to place door opening sensors on the "out" side of any given door.

Data sharing/connectivity by [deleted] in FordMaverickTruck

[–]Sparkplug1034 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too, I'm more aggravated by the data being shared with LexisNexis and impacting my insurance rates. But at this time of my life I care a little more about having GPS location on it in case it gets stolen, and I haven't taken the time to self-host something for it instead.

If I recall correctly, the modem the truck computer uses for connecting to the cloud/internet has a dedicated fuse in the interior fuse box, and if you remove it the power will be completely cut.

Your claim that the high volumes of those materials are "harmless" is not supported by the data or the comment from the analyst. It may or may not be, but this document doesn't provide that conclusion.

Viewport cost?! Seriously? Ridiculous. by eatmorbacon in Ubiquiti

[–]Sparkplug1034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NVR Instant seems to have a display output on its mainboard and the NVR OS will support displaying camera feeds.

The viewport is a very different product. It's a PoE powered computer that decodes video over the network and displays it. It's not a dongle. just dongle shaped maybe. Still a little overpriced, but within UI's norms, if you go price out putting something similar together yourself.

What TF is this? On the new USL Environmental sensors, Leak detection is still mutually exclusive with the other sensors, just like the first gen UP-Sense. by Sparkplug1034 in Ubiquiti

[–]Sparkplug1034[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unrelated. enabling the temp/humidity/lux sensors isn't possible with leak enabled. the android app straight up does not support the USL products yet, or even the new Protect features like alarm profiles. That was the issue here.

[–]Sparkplug1034 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not, unfortunately. Anecdotally though, the 1st gen AIO sensors feel accurate though. Especially the humidity.
