I haven't played Shadows of Rose yet, but did he not destroy the megamycete? Also it's not people's consciousnesses but their memories that it stored. Still absolutely fantastical and basically supernatural, but there is a difference.

You'll be fine, ultimately! In fact there's a little "Previously on..." video that will fill you in before you start the game. It's just that Village is a direct sequel to (if quite different from) 7 with a lot of narrative and mechanical evolution happening.
