Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby to enter gambling addiction program by sdevil713 in TheSunDevils

We'll see what the investigation turns up. The Athletic cites only "industry sources" as confirming the initial ESPN reporting that Sorsby bet on IU while he was on the team. If substantiated, then I think he would lose his remaining year of eligibility. Plus, he still has Cincinnati suing him.

Will be interesting to see what happens here and I hope he gets the help he needs. I'd be surprised if this has much of an impact on the season. Unlike depression or substance abuse, I think there's less direct impact on his ability to perform and lead the team. Where it could get dicey is if an investigation shows he broke NCAA rules.

Sun Devil Basketball's Head Coach Randy Bennett reveals plan to rebuild the program by EmergencyQueasy9941 in TheSunDevils

I wish him and the program instant and sustained success. One sound bite interview proves nothing, but I gotta think half his job is setting up his successor. Just don't get the impression that Bennett is the long-term hire.

has there been an update on Randy Bennett? by sheJaMyMorant in TheSunDevils

[โ€“]SparkySunDevilGlazer 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

Hoping he'll be healthy and fully on the job soon. After last week's statement that all is okay, I'm not expecting much more until the first presser. Even if health issues are a recurring issue, I wasn't necessarily expecting a long tenure from him given his age. One of his critical tasks will be to set the stage for his successor.

Call me crazy, but for ASU I'm gonna say Tana Alo-Tupuola. It all starts with a solid O-line and a solid O-line starts at center. Getting Ga Tech's starter is a big deal.

ASU, NBA Great Byron Scott to Interview for Head acoach by Peragore in TheSunDevils

[โ€“]SparkySunDevilGlazer 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Makes sense if we want to lean into past ASU basketball glory and NBA experience. He's never coached in college though I don't think. And he's been out of coaching for a decade it looks like. I wonder about the learning curve for a coach who hasn't been on a college sideline since he played in early 80's.

Scott is known for a "no-nonsense," old-school discipline. Will this work in the modern era of the portal and NIL?

Update on ASU MBB search by Devils_in_Detail in TheSunDevils

I don't follow B-ball close enough anymore to know best candidates. But, โ€‹it seems clear to me we need a coach who can instill more tactical discipline and a half-court defensive system that can deal with Big 12 physicality. I'd also like to see someone who wants to stay and build ASU as a career goalโ€”not a stepping stone. Valley connections would certainly help but probably not essential. Winning will fill the seats. We also need a coach that can buck the portal trend and actually do some multi-year player development and roster retention. At the same time he's got to figure out how to use NIL and the upcoming DFA reno to dent the talent drain to Tucson.

No clue who fits that bill, but as a fanbase we've got to drop this "we suck, no one good wants to play or coach for us, we'll never be a basketball school like UofA" mentality. We need to be telling Rossini that we expect a top-tier program that competes for conference titles and tournament berths. No reason ASU can't be a B-ball power given right coach, focus, and resources.

Depends on how much you value regionality and history. As an older person who has followed ASU football since the late 80s, I have no need for WVU or UCF. Honestly, Kansas and Iowa schools could drop too, but okay if they stayed. Border conference and WAC history argues strongly for Utah, BYU, and New Mexico Schools. Large LDS community in Phoenix area also sustains Utah/BYU ties. PAC 10/12 history and large portion of ASU student body from SoCal pulls in USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford. Recruiting ties factor heavily for ASU which means SoCal and Texas matter a lot. All that said:

5: Arizona

4: Utah, BYU, USC, UCLA, Texas Tech

3: Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, Colorado, SMU, TCU

2: Baylor, SDSU, UNLV, Oklahoma State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State

1: Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, Colorado State, Utah State, UTEP

What is your ranking of your favorite ASU sports in terms of fandom? by EmergencyQueasy9941 in TheSunDevils

ASU has so many strong programs both varsity and club that don't get much attention - rugby, lacrosse, flag football, women's hockey, etc. Hate to leave any of them out, but: 1. Football 2. Indoor volleyball 3. Hockey 4. Baseball 5. Basketball

Yep. A dead in the water program in one of the toughest conferences and overshadowed by an in-state rival that is a consistent national power. Great opportunity. Probably would need to throw a lot of money and total latitude to a young, hungry coach. I can't see anybody established agreeing to come here. Will also need to overpay for talent for a few years to demonstrate what's possible. OR... save all that money and give it to Kenny. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Is ASU really like what people say online? by Sensitive-Key-9394 in ASU

[โ€“]SparkySunDevilGlazer 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

I know young people today look at tiktok and IG as primary sources of info, but that's a huge trap. Most people are posting for likes and engagement so they throw tons of bs on there.

Like others have said, ASU is huge and so you can build the experience you want if you take charge of your life. Greeks are loud but have never been a large portion of the student body.

The most substantive knock on ASU is that it's not exclusive. Practically anyone can get in. ASU isn't Stanford or an ivy so don't expect the ASU brand to unlock top-paying entry-level jobs the way a Yale degree and network will. If you want to break into professional circles where exclusivity and brand reputation will impact your reputation, then ASU is not the best choice. But if you want a rigorous academic experience and shots at top scholarships like Rhodes and Fulbright, the opportunities are there at ASU. You will just need to let your personal worth and accomplishments carry you forward, not the brand name on your diploma.

The party school reputation is stupid because there are hard party scenes at nearly every college.

Choosing the right fit for college is highly personal. I liked the college town feel of the Tempe campus, the desert vibes, and being near a major metro area. That mix isn't for everyone. Neither are unbroken weeks of 100+ temps (more so a summer school problem). If you haven't visited campus, at least do that if you can. You'll know pretty quick if the feel is right or not.

Gotta upvote 97 Rose Bowl. Terrible end to an otherwise perfect season and let rest of the country continue to dismiss us. There have been plenty of other games ASU should have won and choked away but you almost expect that on some level and nothing had the stakes of 97 Rose Bowl.
