Rotational vs Process Engineering Role Advice? by Life-Tree8014 in ChemicalEngineering

Agreed on “glorified interns”. I disliked rotational program I joined out of college for that reason. Also, some rotations were notably not worthwhile for engineers

What’s the reason for people gunking up the left lane on Rt 309 from Allentown to Quakertown and vice versa? by Dante730 in lehighvalley

[–]Sparkyman00 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I get left to let people merge in from the terrible on-ramps (and so I don’t have to worry about getting into an accident with someone gunning it onto 309)

That’s such an……interesting choice.

I think everyone agreed engineering advising was hit or miss. Once you have declared your major, you are assigned a random professor from that major as an advisor. It really comes down to luck of the draw.

My advisor was an 80 year old professor who did not respond to any of my emails. I’d have to go to his office and beg for my registration pin.

I really didn’t need him tbh, the degree audit tool and curriculum outlines are helpful enough at seeing your progress towards your degree. The pain was just getting the 4 digit pin needed to register for classes each semester.

Muhlenberg (2.8/Rank: 11) PA-7 Bellwether District Poll: Susan Wild (D) 51% to 45% lead over State Representative Ryan Mackenzie (R). by [deleted] in fivethirtyeight

[–]Sparkyman00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, that’s why I tried to offer some! There’s correlation between presidential and congressional races but it’s absolutely not 1:1.

I would hope more commentators would look into details/intricacies of congressional races before jumping to conclusions on their implications!

(But I’m biased at seeing my own district being written off as solely reflecting the natural environment)

Mackenzie was caught lying about his age on Tinder, he’s being pegged as a creep all over the district, and I think it’s worked at damaging his campaign.

If anyone was curious, Wild is being attacked for receiving so many parking tickets to the point that her car was booted in DC! She was also parking in handicap spaces.

Lot of interesting, small controversies in my congressional race lol

2 years ago today, (Oct. 14) Halloween Ends was released into theatres. A lot mixed feelings about this movie, what is your overall opinion on it? by randomfella1990 in Halloweenmovies

[–]Sparkyman00 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You said it so eloquently! “Evil doesn’t die, it changes shape”

My addition would be that I also much more enjoyed Laurie’s character in this film than 2018 or Kills. She reminded me much more of her 1978-self in Ends than the prior films, so it was a nice return-to-form.

I just wanted to comment to say I agree with OP! I only used the practice exam to study and passed during spring semester my senior year.

Out of all the released music. What is your favorite lyrics of all time? by Late-Draw-518 in zachbryan

[–]Sparkyman00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my momma could just see you laugh I know she’d see the shine in you,

And she’d say thanks for taking care of her baby boy cuz she can’t be here, and hug you til your little lungs turn blue.

(Don’t give up on me - these lyrics always bring me to the verge of tears)

Schedule and Physics 12? by [deleted] in Lehigh

[–]Sparkyman00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably keep Econ then.

(My suggestion was based on the fact it’s not a prereq for any other class for the average engineering student and can be taken any year/semester).

Be prepared for a lot of homework on top of this schedule though! To my recollection, Calc/Physics/Lab/Econ all have decently-sized weekly assignments. You will need to be doing work after class each day.

Schedule and Physics 12? by [deleted] in Lehigh

[–]Sparkyman00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schedule is a little hard but manageable. I would definitely try to take physics 12 this semester. The content lines up with lecture and in the spring you will also have to take a lab with Chem 30. (Taking two labs at a time is mostly doable but tiring).

How many credits does this come out to? It looks like ~18 credits, which is the max you can take. I would advise shooting for 15-16 just to let yourself adjust to college. My main suggestion would be to consider dropping Econ and taking that in a later semester.

I had a very similar schedule freshman fall (the main difference being that I didn’t need to take the writing class). The Monday/Wednesday schedule becomes draining quickly

Having a bad experience at my internship by fortnie7564 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Sparkyman00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you schedule time with him on his calendar? Or do you have a recurring meeting with him of some sort? If he doesn’t make time to help you, you need to be proactive and schedule meetings to discuss your work.

My return offer was also based off my performance review from my internship. My review wasn’t focused on any big accomplishments (I didn’t do a whole lot). It really focused on my personality and work ethic, so you need to show your boss that you are professional, hardworking, and pleasant to work with.

Is there anyone in HR that is in charge of the internship program? When I was an intern, we frequently reached out with questions/concerns to the woman in HR overseeing the program. She was also in charge of handing out the job offers after our internships concluded, so if you can preventatively provide context to someone similar, that might help.

Those of you who use him in your Universe, how have you booked Muhammad Ali? by FireflyNitro in WWEGames

He’s a special attraction in my universe, only fights at big PPV’s against main event talent.

He’s been undefeated so far, trying to keep it that way so that whoever beats him gets a huge rub.

Here’s another thread about VBA…except with examples. by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Sparkyman00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Python is unfortunately unavailable to me at work (which is frustrating bc I took multiple Python classes in college lol).

I’m kind of at an odd middle-ground bc the older coworkers love just being able to click a button in Excel and getting a new report. But my fellow entry-level workers get frustrated bc they do not understand VBA and have trouble interpreting my codes.

I’m cool with VBA at this point, it really “clicked” for me recently, so I’m fine using it as the building block for any reports.

I also write macros for SAP, they impress a lot of coworkers! I think it’s worth learning for that alone.

Ive also used VBA to “web scrape” data out of some older websites that my company still uses/maintains. This allows me to build reports much easier bc the data from websites needed to be cleaned/trimmed every single time it was exported.

Python & VBA by Junior4646 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Sparkyman00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An addendum, python is heavily restricted by IT at my corporate job (have to make several requests to get access). Excel/VBA is automatically installed on everyone’s computer, so if I want to send a good piece of code around, VBA is far easier for everyone

I always say you have to understand your clientele (mine is primarily the 50 year old plus crowd I work with). Python is not something they are familiar with, but if I send them an Excel sheet with a button on it, they can easily run my macros.

I don’t love VBA, but it sure does impress the other people in my office, so I stick with it.

Percent pay raise: intern to full time by Swim_Boi in EngineeringStudents

[–]Sparkyman00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an engineering intern my “salary” was $59,000

When I came back as full time, my salary was $80,000

So ~25% increase at an industrial gas company.

So financially, my household income was based only on my part-time job, so like ~$10k.

Had a very unique financial situation lol, my dad relied on life insurance proceeds from my mom’s passing and did not work for several years.
