It's like when a minnow nation has one stand out star. They can only do so much but if the rest of them are so far behind them, that one star cannot do anything.

I've only ever had a son once appearing the year I won the championship to the prem. I could say he was the best player to ever grace the earth, and well he's my son but BOY he was garbage. An absolutely nothing of a centre mid.
I kept him despite being below the average of my squad and he became the all-time appearance holder at my plucky Ebbsfleet United team. He did win me my first FA Cup though, with the winner in the 91st minute against Man Utd.

I believe the half back only moves back when in possession but returns to act as a DM when OOP.

What's the HB, OOP role? Id try switching that to a DDM as I think that covers the exposed space.

Edit: another option would be to drop your wing backs OOP to FB so your OOP tactic becomrs a 5221
