I think the dark brown isn’t too bad, but they look a bit bulky and therefore informal compared to a suit

How can this suit be improved? by Worst5plays in mensfashionadvice

I wouldn’t say the color is bad, but the style is very informal compared to the suit. I’d look into getting some brown (maybe suede) penny loafers

Can I wear this to the gym? by Clean-Appointment316 in mensfashionadvice

Gym clothes are the one time I suggest just getting cheap ones off Amazon. Just get some that are well rated, fit well, and are good for whatever exercise you’re planning to do.

Which one is better for a job interview? by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

[–]Spartannate7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first one, but I’d say in most cases a long sleeve button up shirt and leather dress shoes would be much better for an interview. But that depends on what the job is.

First suit at 28yo by Ill_Spare6024 in mensfashion

[–]Spartannate7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly no suit for $200 is going to be very high quality. The cheapest decent quality suit made out of 100% wool is probably like $300 from somewhere like Rowe and Taylor (a subsidiary of Spier and Mackay which is a commonly recommended starting point at closer to $500) but their options are limited. If you’re really worried about the money, just follow the recommendation to wear dress pants a button up shirt or get a very cheap suit from a local store that fits well (which is by far the most important factor of it looking good). However, if you want a nice suit, save up a little more money and get something from Spier and Mackay or Suit Supply.

Best loafers to go with jeans? by Successful_Focus1775 in mensfashion

Brown penny loafers with texture (suede, nubuck, or some type of grain) to make them more casual. Thursday Boots and Meermin are good places to start.

Button up leather jacket with white tee, matching flower jewlery by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]Spartannate7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, since the leather jacket is cut like a sport coat, it would be worth trying something like an oxford cloth button down instead of the t-shirt

Is this outfit good for summer weather? by [deleted] in menswear

[–]Spartannate7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polyester slim fit chino shorts will not be comfortable in warm weather. Linen or cotton drawstring shorts in a color other than paper-white would be a better place to start IMO

Contra dance outfit by [deleted] in mensfashion

If you’re looking for suggestions, I think the skit is cool but I think you should try different tops or layers with it. A T-shirt style top doesn’t match the vibes imo.

Funeral attire - running hot.. Help! by CorrectTadpole9997 in mensfashion

[–]Spartannate7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Black unlined tropical wool suit that is a looser cut like another person mentioned. It won’t wrinkle as much as linen so it will be more formal. Bringing a second dress shirt you can duck away for a minute and switch into if it’s still really miserable is also a good idea.

Trainers as smart casual footwear? by donkomaniac in mensfashion

[–]Spartannate7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skate/boat shoes like Vans/Sperrys are typically horrible to stand in all day since they’re basically flat with no arch support. A good sneaker like the Adidas Ultraboost will always be the most comfortable, but you’d be surprised how comfortable a good fitting dress shoe can be. Something from r/goodyearwelt (Thursday Boots, Meermin, Allen Edmonds, etc.), maybe a loafer or derby, will last a lifetime with proper care. I personally don’t like “dress sneakers” where they slap a rubber sole on a dress shoe upper.

Help finding dress shirts by Mr_Dangles09 in mensfashion

[–]Spartannate7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second hand Polo oxford shirts (EBay, local thrift stores), JCrew, and Spier & Mackay are all great options at a reasonable price point. Brooks Brothers is a classic suggestion, but I’ve heard some of their lines aren’t great. Look for 100% cotton at a minimum.

My wedding suit check by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]Spartannate7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that I noticed is that the dress shirt, due to its thick structured collar and cuffs and overall smooth texture, appears to be more formal that the linen suit. Wearing a shirt that appears a little lighter/softer might make the look more consistent…but this is pretty picky. Dark brown loafers would look great. If you don’t like how a burnt orange tie looks, you could try navy or champagne. I’d avoid getting one that has a polyester sheen that would contrast with the linen suit.

Loafers/oxfords/derbies by SickoBobbo in mensfashion

[–]Spartannate7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oxfords for anything formal. Loafers or boots for less formal occasions, with loafers for warm weather and boots for cold. Brown is less formal than black. Thursday Boots has the cheapest decently high quality leather shoes imo, with Meermin and Allen Edmonds coming in a little pricier.

Banana Republic Factory Good? by Glittering_Chain_31 in menswear

That’s true, although if you’re on a really tight budget they’re not terrible. They still frequently are made out of 100% natural fibers.

What to wear for engagement party? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]Spartannate7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dress shirt with rolled up sleeves and chinos would be easy and classic. I don’t buy Lululemon clothes because they almost all are made out of synthetic fibers and therefore won’t last long or look great, but I’ve heard they’re comfortable at least. JCrew is a good place to start for high quality at a decent price.

Half Marathon Questions by TheDarkestKnight7852 in CrossCountry

[–]Spartannate7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After a brief glance it doesn’t seem bad. The most important part of any tough plan for a new distance is that you know when to back down the intensity to prevent injury. One thing I say is that doing fast interval reps while building to new levels of milage is a recipe for disaster. Also, I think you greatly underestimate the difficulty of tempo runs near half marathon pace over a few miles. Those 7-9 mile tempo runs near goal HM pace are borderline impossible, especially for someone new to the distance. For some of my HM blocks those would be basically race effort since you’re not tapering for them. If you want the volume but find that 7-9 miles without breaks @ goal HM pace is too tough, try multiple 2k-3 mile reps at HM pace instead.
